"And so Germany shall be destroyed! HAHAHAHAHAHAHAH!!!!!!"

Please note the number of exclamation marks, clearly a sign of a man who wears his underpants on his head.

he did scream at the end, that the German people were to blame for the downfall!
Yeah, I wonder if that really did happen? Seems plausable knowing his personality.

the quote was taken from eyewitnesses in the bunker.

Hitler beleived that he had been appointed to the task by a greater authority and beleived inhis ability. So when the events surrounding him started to fall to bits he could not blame himself for it.

And in the end he ordered the absolute destruction of Germany. Thankfully the greater majority of his commanders ignored the order.

Probably. And was as noticeable as a man up a ladder wearing a glow in the dark balaclava and smoking endless cigarettes in sniper alley.

But wouldn't the commanders who obeyed him till the end (his end) have to be ideologues as well? Otherwise, they should have just shot the b******d and put Germany out of her misery. After all, several of them shot themselves, why not shoot him first and then shoot yourself?

Jimbo, they were in that bunker for weeks having the crap bombed out of them. I think we can safely say, come the end, that none of them were thinking straight.

I guess it is a waste of time trying to use rational thought to understand their mindsets. By then, I would expect they were all a bit loony. Watching your idealism crash down before your eyes in one of the most graphic ways imaginable, had to be pretty hard.

For all their crimes against humanity, their victims can at least take comfort in that there is very litte unvisited injustice. Even if there were some that didn't pay for their crimes with their lives, the guilt and sorrow of seeing their ideal world lay in ashes ensures a degree of punishment in and of itself. Nobody rides for free.

We have always been at war with the Germans, just a bit of a lull in the middle

The German Officers were bound by teh oath they took to defend the Reich and hitler. On the 20th July 1944 after the bomb blast it was announced that Hitler was dead, many officers fel that they were no longer bound to the oath.

We have always been at war with the Germans, just a bit of a lull in the middle

Not until the 1910's did our relationshiop start to go fatally wrong with germany. Until about 1900 we were friends with Germany/Austria/Prussia. It was when germany tried to expand its territories, and the assassination of Archduke Ferdinand in Sarajevo(? Sorry, but i never covered WW1 at school) that it got nasty, with other countries denouncing the expansionist view of the country. WW1 left behind the Versailles treaty, which cooked Germany's goose to such an extent that the simmering tension and injustice caused WW2. it was also repsonsible for the total cock-up in the Middle East.
Just think your statements through before posting them next time.
Anybody feel free to correct my above statement.

The Middle East layout as we know it now was created by the British/Yank/French etc sitting down with a map and deciding who wanted what, without total disregard for the existing countries and tribes. Lawrence of Arabia tried to tell them, and even presented his own ideas for the partition of the Middle East, taking into account tribal boundaries and who would work together and who would try to kill each other. He was ignored. Hence the total conflict and ongoing wars in the area.

I have read that Hitler's supposed anti-semitism was nothing more than a political expedient to unite the German nation - ie, as a minority, they became a scapegoat upon which to lay the blame for all of Germany's woes! Credence is given to this theory when one learns that, prior to the Great War, Hitler had a passionate crush on a young Austrian Jewess he admired from afar - ie following her around, but never actually speaking to her!

That just about sums up the situation. To take an example, modern day iraq was created by the british and did not take into account tribal boundaries and the fallout can still be felt in present day Iraq.

Morse you could also apply that to the whole continent of Africe too!

As for Mosquito's point about German -Anglo Relations I would agree. I think the high point would be the Battle of Waterloo. I know its deep in the past but just imagine folks, the English and the Prussians on the same side fighting the FRENCH!!! Times have indeed changed.

And lets face it, most of the no-go areas in the world are ex colonies. The Ivory Coast, one of only two FCO "don't even think about it people" countries was ex french. When the countries pulled out things certainly got very messy. Damned shame.

A great movie describing the existing situations in these "Empire" countries was "Guns at Batasi" with Richard Attenborough as Reg Sgt Major and some great characte actors.

Set in East Africa in the 60's and depicts the decline of British Empire. If you get a chance to seeit, don't miss it!

I think I saw it a couple of years ago. Didn't the black officers/soldiers rise up, and the RSM try and hold the good old Colonial traditions toegteher whilst under seige in the Mess?
I'm afraid i found it a little too disturbing. Just like Long and the Short, i can't watch that in one sitting either.
