Some sort of recoilless rifle round?
    Wombat/Mobat?

Based purely on the vents, which there don't seem to be enough of so I'm not very convinced...

    Nope!

Clue, the top bit is used for protection

It must be a fairly 'chunky' calibre to require being loaded seperately. The cap (top bit), is just that. It performs the same function as the chocolate on a Mars bar, only there to prevent the filling falling out.
I reckon that it's not allied, as they tended to use bagged charges. Not high velocity, as it is not very pointy. So it's not AAA although it seems to be equipped with a time fuze.

I reckon it is something of the order of 15cm schwere Feldhaubitze or Soviet 122mm

    How close?

When I say allied I didn't mean to leave out the Soviets... I should have said British and American.

A bit smaller than 15 cm and on t'other side!

I still can't find a seperately loaded round in the allied arsenal smaller than 150mm. All I can find are QF shells.

    OK twenty questions. Yes/No answers

    1st five...

    1. American?
    2. WW2?
    3. High explosive (HE)?
    4. Howitzer?
    5. 105mm?

    7. Artillery projectile?
    8. High velocity?
    9. Anti-tank?
    10. Anti-aircraft?

    OK,time for some clues!

    Used by the Axis powers.
Not used to destroy, but could help in doing so.
Fired from a ships gun mounted on land.

Right, I am really confused now...
it is 'fired' from a land based naval gun, with a calibre smaller than 150mm but it isn't an artillery projectile or a low velocity howitzer round.

    Axis, so

    11. German?
    12. Japanese?
    13. Italian?
    14. Propaganda weapon?
    15. Will I kick myself when the answer is revealed?

    Think bigger![/QUOTE]

German naval gun, bigger than 88mm but smaller than 150mm. But not 105mm.

OK. The next most obvious calibre would then be...

    20. 12.8cm

    I'm spent.

    OK,you're close enough!

    German 12.7cm star shell.

    Your turn!
