Having gone round the houses somewhat, first thinking it was a hand thrown AT grenade, then suspecting that plate at the base might have something to do with the PIAT and looking at a wider array of mortar projectiles than I ever thought possible I finally found:

    No. 68 AT Grenade, 1940+. ??

(ironically the Hogg book cited in that article is only 3 feet away from me, a fine example of the internet, overcomplicating things)

Once again correct, the world's first HEAT weapon, 1940.

OK, I'll have a bash. Well it would appear to be an anti-tank shell rather than an HE, as it is lacking a fuse.
The prominant driving bands could be an early form of squeeze-bore technology, used to increase muzzle velocity for the kinectic AT rounds. I thought at first that the ballistic cap was made of wood, which would usually indicate a dummy or practice round. I'm not so sure now. The cap isn't the most streamlined example that I have seen, so I'm ruling out the APCBC round.
As we are in the Allied strand, that would take out any German shells.
It doesn't seem to match any 17-pdr round I have seen either.

Right, my guess is an Armour-Piercing, Composite Rigid (AP/CR) round for the British 6-pdr (57mm) from 1943.

"A sub-calibre Tungsten carbide core carried in a lightweight full-calibre outer projectile which disintegrated on striking the target, leaving the sub-calibre core to penetrate the target." from 'Armoured Firepower' by Peter Gudgin.

Well done for having a bash mate but it isn't a projectile at all (I thought it was something similar to you when I first saw it), more a piece of engineer/infantry equipment.
(Ignore the 'allied' location of this thread, s'definitely become 'general', though this is an allied piece of kit).
I'll leave the bas**rd up for today and then put the answer up, don't reckon I'd get it in a million years.

Maybe a bigger clue, it was briefly a star in shaving Ryans Privates.

    Tadaa!
Never really thought about the name much before... 'Bangs Galore' or some remnant of imperial days?

Aha, Wiki  has the following:
Bangalore torpedo was first devised by Captain McClintock, of the British Army Bengal, Bombay and Madras Sappers and Miners at Bangalore, India, in 1912. He invented it as a means of exploding booby traps and barricades left over from the Boer and Russo-Japanese Wars.

    Your go Bod.
