Hi, I was looking at the treasures of a late WW2 veteran, medals buttons etc, and this plaque on the inside of the lid was pointed out. I suspect Italian any help on deciphering it? Regards Charles
Joseph - any clues where the late veteran might have come into contact with an Italian POW in 1943? What unit he was with etc?? Capitan Maggiore is a rank (I think) - I thought that Maggiore was his first name to start with and was abbreviated for some reason on the disc.... Anyhoo, the National Archives of Australia shows a few POWs of that surname sent to Australia, but they were all captured in 1941.
Hi Dave, Thanks, Maggiore apears to be the rank of Major but I carn't fit the Cap in. Could be a POW camp in UK. I wonder if the number is his service number or POW number. Regards Charles
Hi, Its an Italian nco rank caporalmaggiore - there are 3 or 4 levels within the rankeach having a different word added. Corporal Major is a literal translation, for some reason I think it is a paratroop specific rank. Pete.
Pete, Thanks for that I will look into a paratroop connection, Mike I am under the impression it was given to the Quartermaster of a POW camp in UK........... but I believe the box is made of Olive Wood. Regards Charles
