...To quote from an infantryman who was witness to the destruction of the Matildas in front of Telegraph Hill, Arras in May 1940. Here's a photo from an album that I was looking at yesterday to back up his sarcasm(?) from a generation earlier...

I think its a collection point for the dead (in this case, German...most of the pics of deadies in the album are British). There's a nice one of a cart load being drawn by a mule...echoes of the "Bring out yer dead" plague days... and a few open mass grave shots (he was one hell of a cheery photographer!!!)

 

Here's the 'Dead Cart' I mentioned...

 

Some gruesome photos there Dave, reminds me of the stereoscope pictures in the Hill 60 museum (I think) from WW1. Terrifying but thought provoking.
