Just thought I might be able to find out what he did in the R.A.F having his service number.
But I think you have helped with what you have said. So thank for that Ross

No link between any RAF service number and employed trade. All that a service number for OR/NCO gives is type of service enrolled and possibly approx entry date.

eg Enrolled RAFVR Blackpool in a block of 10,799 service men commencing June 1940

His index card in Air78 is stamped F which suggests prewar service but looks like he had been released too long to retain his previous service number.

The Form 2520A is a bit more informative giving final rank as Cpl and the Africa Star points to Middle East/North Africa service.

Finally the front cover states service group number 22 which narrows DoB to between 1895 and 1915 which also suggests pre war regular service returned to colours for DpE.

Only one George Royston with no middle names in AIR78 so possible.

Not got Cpl stripes up but does wear Africa Star ribbon in group photo.

Good find Martin - looks quite possible.

I’ll drop the lady a message later, direct her to this thread. She may well not know his service number, of course, but fingers crossed.

According to the photos attached to that George Royston (post #8) he was in Italy on 9 Jan 44 and North Africa on Xmas day 1944.

As promised, I got in touch with the lady whose great uncle the man in the link was. She very kindly replied and told me that, unfortunately, she doesn’t have any more information on him, but that she may be getting some more info from one of her uncles in the next couple of weeks. If she finds out anything more of use, she will let me know.

What she could tell me for now is that he lived in Nottingham, Bradford and Bingley over the course of his life.

Try a speculative application to RAF Disclosures using .GOV.UK online method and parallel application to TNA.

Use the Dob and DoD (plus get death cert image from GRO) info from the tree that Martin linked to.

1910 DoB with Service Group 22 points to July/Aug 1940 enlistment.

Will confirm if this info links to 1351907 Royston.

Time of essence if it is a link to get in before TNA price increases applied.

If Cranwell comes back with pallet ref then you can update your TNA application.
