always room for a well reasoned analysis, after 10 minutes in depth study.

Why so dismissive, Kevin?, PM makes a fair and only passing comment, it's not like 'a lot of dosh' isn't an intrinsic part of historic and display flying anyway.

I don't pretend to be an expert on CAA fees (imagine!), but there does appear to be some serious concern rising from the airshow and vintage side of town.
I like to at least try and separate internet panic/outrage from more serious commentators, but there's a degree of despondency from the grown-ups on this.

For what it's worth it looks like a lot of dosh to me to?

Anyone care to break down and explain the costs to idiot level?

By the way, what happened in the end regarding an investigation and did the pilot survive?

I'm glad VP drew attention to the proposed new charges, and that KB and others have kept the topic fresh. The CAA are inviting comments by the end of February and I will be writing with my comments.

In researching a bit of local history through my local paper for 1955 I came across a report of an air display at Debden airfield in September 1955. The same edition reported on an inquest into the fatal crash of a Meteor at Stradishall. The pilot was practising for the display. I will start a separate topic with my typed version of the articles.

Courts of inquiry are always far reaching...a giant eye as you might say. In this case every facet of the aircraft and its pilot will be subject to intense scrutiny...... background and aviation behavioral traits, manoeuvre envelope, maintenance carried out to manufacturer's manuals and records up to date.... technical support investigated....list not exhaustive

I saw one report that the technical manual was out of date.

Regarding the Meteor,it appeared to be a difficult aircraft to handle for the inexperienced.....its operational history has been reviewed as "meatbox" as the number of flying accidents reflect.

The report has been published now.

Shoreham Airshow crash: Pilot may have thought he was flying a different aircraft, investigators suggest

It seems clear to this layman that the pilot should be locked up. People have been for doing far less in a motor-car. The cowboys of the flying fraternity (and there seem to be plenty of them) are of course still in denial and insisting that there could still have been a technical problem and it wasn't all his fault.

I once fell off the back of a motorcycle showing off whilst wheelieing it. It would be nice to say that a technical fault with the machine could have been responsible but it would be complete bollocks of course.

He was too slow and started a maneuver too low. They think that he might have mixed up flying the Hunter with a Jet Provost (his more usual aircraft). He's a lucky man in more ways than one.
