Just reading Len Deighton's Fighter and about Hugh Dowding starting in the Royal Garrison Artillery, and learning to fly in 1914 and attaining a Royal Aero Club Aviators' Certificate. Here is a copy (from Ancestry).

    Name:Hugh Caswall Tremenheere Dowding
    Birth Date:24 Apr 1882

    Hi Mark,

Do you know what the NB is in place of birth?

Sorry if it is a silly question.

    Cheers

    Geoff,

Sorry I have no idea. I do know that Moffat is in Dumfrieshire in Scotland. However a number of results on a Google search regarding Moffat come up as Moffat, N.B.

Maybe a Scottish member could clear it up.

I did think at first "Northern Borders" or similar which would not normally be used for place of birth.

N.B. usually denotes New Brunswick Canada.

As you say, someone will be along after their busy lunch.;)

    Cheers

I did think of the New Brunswick connection, but discounted that out of hand.

Think we will have to wait and see.
