How Would You Lay The Forum Out?

I'm buying the removal of 'Battle specifics, and moving stuff from there to 'Theatres of war'. It's an odd sort of repetition going on, and geographical breakdown is a bit clearer.

Moving threads now - will doubtless make some cock-ups.
Will likely add a few more Geographical/Operational subs to 'Theatres' - D-Day, Dieppe etc. are obvious themes.

(Cheers for the 'It ain't broke' comments by the way, good to hear. I really am only looking at small tweaks to improve clarity.)

Think I'm going to call 'Theatres', 'Theatres & Operations' with clearer subs by Geography.
    We'll see.

I am generally a 'if it aint broke' sort of bloke and I think the current system works pretty well but I can see the advantage of a few alterations.
I agree the 'battle specifics' is a bit too vague but possible problem with more specific geographic locations might get a bit difficult. The 'Theatres' idea seems ok but again each is such a wide area it could do with sub-forum - and isn't that largely what already exists?.
Working by year obviously wouldn't work as so many threads would cross over and it would be a nightmare to administer.
Would it be possible to sub-categorise threads by eg Regiment/Squadron/Ship or is this already achieved by tags? Could indexing be improved in some way?
Just a few thoughts before I hit the sack.

Bugger - I had better record latest thoughts or I will forever lose them in the land of Nod.
    1. No link to new 'people of WW2' forum on front page.
    2. I have never found a direct link to 'the barracks' on front page.

    enough - off to bed.

    RIP 'Battle specifics'.
Most moved into theatres. made increasing sense as I did it.
(And we didn't half have some daft What Ifs years ago... Some flushing to be done there.)

I think Tags are indeed the only real option for micro-marking of particular subjects, Mike.

Now looking at giving Theatres a few more subs for the larger or more 'distinct' operations or themes. Hopefully letting people jump more easily to particular interests if they want.

    Eg.
    NW Europe:
---D-Day, Dieppe, Germany. ('Germany' might actually be a clearer separate heading for fighting that reached the Heimat, and the fall of Berlin etc.).
    Italy:
    ---Anzio, Sicily

    etc.
Keeping the main headings for more general stuff.

I agree. Quite happy with the way it is.

    marcus69x I love WW2 meah!!!

I agree it's pretty cool as it is. My only request is that if you do change things around, PLEASE don't get rid of the portal. :)

    cheers

Just interested Marcus - cos I make very little use of it - why do you say that about the portal?

It's funny Diane-I only realised what the portal was a couple of months ago! I like the portal as it's a quick way of looking at the recent posts and I can flick through to see if there is anything about Recce! Then if I don't find anything I go to the main menu and read ABSOLUTELY every recent post-because I don't like to miss anything:lol:

I never put a direct link to the barracks on the Portal deliberately, as I sort of think people can go looking if it's non-WW2 stuff to be added. ;)
(Good point about link to the new People forum though, I'll do that now.)

I too like the Portal for what it does (Though it's an absolute bastard to set up behind the scenes). Changing big stuff like that isn't what I'm looking at - just tweaking the categories a little to smooth over a few bumps.

Something is messed up with "people of WW2" area, looks to be outside of the frame. (scrap this, looks fine now, must have been my browser)

As someone who has been here but a short time I like the board layout, it makes sense to me and I have never had issues finding anything.
My only suggestion might be the combining of geneaology, history, and research.

    Hi Diane,

Because that's what I have bookmarked for this forum so whenever I click on my WW2talk tab, it takes me directly there. And as 4jonboy says, it's a quick way of looking at the recent posts.

For me, it's the face of WW2talk. :)
