I'm researching a friend's uncle who was in the Royal Engineers, 772 Artisan Works Co. I know his name, James Cheetham, his service number - 1942275, the fact he enlisted 12/2/42, embarkment to France 21/6/44 and was wounded 1/7/44. Also know the usual DoB, address, trade (iron worker). I have seen various references on the forum to 772 Artisan Works Co but can I get more details about his service (my friend already has his service record from MoD) and where / how he got wounded? Thanks to anyone that can advise.......Andy.

Have you got a typo here? Do you mean 722 Artisan Works Company? If so there are several War Diaries held by the National Archives.

Welcome aboard. Others may come along and help.

Adding what you have already found can help, saves others from duplication. I have noted the 'Other Ranks' rarely feature in Google searches unless they have been awarded gallantry medals or written their memoirs.

Searching Google will sometimes bring you back here. The site’s search engine is rather simple. You must be agile and keep going.

War diaries can contain almost anything. At the very least, they give the daily movements and most important actions of every unit. They may also contain information on casualties, message logs, rolls of officers (but not O.R.'s), maps, orders, and much else. They are available at the PRO to everyone. Drew5233 and some others are willing to scan them for the benefit of those who cannot get to the National Archives at Kew.

It depends of course how much you want to know, just one battle or campaign for an example.

Please come back and tell us what you found. Scanning threads it is clear some discover the site years after your posts and add their information or request help. Good luck.

I think I know where you got some of your information from but you need to be careful - it was the casualty list dated 1 July 44 NOT the date he was wounded, that was DNR, date not reported. I have no doubt he was wounded around that time but obviously before the list was written.

The list does indeed state 772. Art.Wks.Coy.

Does his service record refer to posting to x(ii) list or CCS (casualty clearing station) or FA (field ambulance) - that may provide a clue to when the incident occurred?

Thanks for all that advice, really helpful and yes of course I'm more than willing to record whatever I find. My first step is to learn how to search - and keep going!
