I'm hoping someone might know the title of an older WWII war action/drama movie that I've been trying to find (in color and probably made in the 70's, 80's). Unfortunately the video store I rented it from is gone, and I've tried the IMDB plot search to no avail. I'm not sure if there were any big name actors. Pretty sure it was WWII with a Japanese squad battling an American squad (probably on an island) hunting and killing each other. The two sides come to an uneasy truce that gets broken and the killing continues until there is only one or two left. During the course of battle, both sides use up most of their weapons and ammo and have to improvise and scrounge.

One memorable reference is a fox hole that both sides use several times where many will die, one of the US soldiers gets trapped there and fakes being dead to avoid being discovered. Your heart pounds as is it seems destined that he will be bayoneted in moments.

Near the end, the last Jap is charging with a sword after the last 2 US soldiers and a US guy tries to fire salvaged bullets that may/not work in a recovered rifle. There are dramatic, large, in-the-barrel slow motion closeup camera shots that were very similar to those used in the movie "Sniper" with Tom Berenger.

Titles confirmed to NOT be the film searching for:

It's NOT "Too Late the Hero", where each side consists of a company of men and isn't reduced to just 1 survivor.

It's also NOT "None But the Brave"...though it does have a similar storyline & scenario but was made in 1965) and had 2 major stars (Sinatra and Clint Walker).

Also NOT "Hell in the Pacific" which only had 1 US soldier (Lee Marvin) and 1 Jap soldier in the movie as opposed to a squad of men on each side.

Would appreciate any guesses that you believe are relevent.

It sounds very like 'None But The Brave' but you've already discounted that. Talking of that Sinatra/Clint Walker film, it boasts one of the most ridiculous performances I've ever seen from the bloke who plays the gung-ho Marine officer and delivers all his dialogue at the top of his voice. On second thoughts maybe Marines talk like that!

WHAT'S THAT MAGGOT, I CAN'T HEARRRR YOU!!!!! GET DOWN AND GIVE ME 50!!!!! Just kidding, :D , yeah, they do portray Marines, especially Drill Instructors as talking that way...

Thanks for your reply, I'm hoping someone out there knows the title and/or one of the actors in the film I saw. It had good cinematics, great action and wasn't cheesy. I know that's subjective and perhaps, since very few like me remember seeing it yet can't recall the title could mean it wasn't that good. o_O

    Have a good one Mark.

Doing some more research on 'None But the Brave' I uncovered a bizarre piece of film folklore. Tommy Sands, the actor who plays the ridiculous Marine lieutenant ,was the ex-husband of Nancy Sinatra. The legend goes that Frank deliberately directed him to give a silly performance in order to ruin his film career in revenge for him divorcing his daughter!

I can't answer your question but I did notice that there's a thread on favourite WW2 movies on the History Channel's website. Perhaps one of the films mentioned may jog your memory? A few that I've not heard of have been mentioned.

Given the age of the film is it a made-for-TV remake of 'None but the Brave' perhaps?
Also are you sure is it a WWII film, it's not set in Korea is it?

Sorry I can't be more of a help.

    Cheers
