Great pictures, Harry, and thanks for posting them. It's all too rare these days that collections like this surface and and its wonderful to see that they are being preserved. (Let me know if you would ever like any of it put online for wider interest). If you haven't found it before, this website page on the home-guard.org site helps identify individual battalions and locations: Structure of the Home Guard (Click on "HOME GUARD", then Structure, - by County, then North Riding). I hope you will keep us posted about progress. Chris

As a result of this thread HarryB has been kind enough to provide me with a wealth of information about his father and the North Riding unit of the Home Guard to which he belonged. I have pulled it together into a website page which can be viewed here: Staffs Home Guard Memories x61NorthRiding Chris
Hello I am researching the home guard in north yorkshire and east yorkshire, could anyone help or point me in the right direction for information, photos etc. thanks Nick
One of these Yorkshire reenactment groups may be able to give you some pointers, Nick: http://www.staffshomeguard.co.uk/J10GeneralInformationReenactmentGroups.htm Chris
I think you have to ask the moderators to do that, Nick (unless you start afresh with a brand new thread). Chris
Hi Peter can you tell me the name of the Officer in charge of Ingleton Home Guard N/Yorks. Or any info. His name will help me with my research. Thanks. aron.
Remember when looking at Yorkshire in the 1940's it was the old east, North, and West Riding. My grandad was in the West Riding home guard as a Don R. Some where I have photos and his actual release document and war medal.
Ingleton, just down the A65 from Kirkby Lonsdale ? Who are the Ingleton Home Guard? WR31 would be the 31st West Riding Battalion (Settle), 56 officers in all. Unfortunately I can't tell you who was based in Ingleton. Will formulate the list tommorrow, hopefully, and e-mail it to you It would be great to see the photo's, Oldman.
Can't tell you the exact officer. When you get the list you may be able to work it out by asking some of the older villagers about the names. A visit to your nearest main library, it may have copies of the voters register 1939/40 for the village. An old phone book might help. Ancestry.com has old phone books online, which may be free to use at the library.
Just checked out your Website Peter, Brilliant information on your Home Guard. I wish i could get hold of some photo's of our Platoon ,and information. Only been able to find two pictures so far . And finding out the detailed information what you have , That just great. With our platoon from a small village , I do not think many people had a camera back in the 1940's Which is a shame . Memories lost forever, Keep up the good work! And thanks for the help.
Hi I have some medals to a James S Watson, which include a WW1 pair (Private, Royal Scots Fusiliers) and a WW2 Defence Medal, so would have he been in the Home Guard and is there anyway of finding out from a list? The Defence medal comes with its box and the address on it is 136 French St Glasgow, so I presume he lived there after the war. Any help appreciated regards Robert
Upon a time I had a small book with a black and amber hard cover, the colours of Hampshire, the booklet -The History of 5 Platoon (City of Winchester) Home Guard. This unit had the unfortunate experience that on their stand down parade the company commander had just given the eyes right when he collapsed, American medics were quickly at hand but failed to save this officer. The booklet lost to me now. We often have access to official documents - History from the diary of everyday life - 'Annie Brewers diary 1930-1969. 1936 Air raid precautions meeting 1939 Saw war start 1942 Mrs Long had a pig killed 2/1/42 The daily writings of Annie Brewer - Pamber Heath
Anyone with copies of the Home Guard list for regions other than the Northern Command. Could you please take a look for this man William Frederick Forrest MacLennan. WFF MacLennan would be great, WF MacLennan acceptable, W MacLennan might do as a starter.
He's not in the Western Command list, unfortunately, Peter. None of that surname at all, in fact Chris
