I have been helping my wife find out information about her great grandfather who was a sergeant in the 7th Battalion Royal Inniskilling Fusiliers during the Great War. We know that he was demobbed and that in the inter-war years he worked as a plasterer in his home town of Ballycastle in County Antrim. We also learned that he instructed the Home Guard in WW2, so we have come here to ask: if he was an instructor he presumably would have had to don uniform again, so where would be the place to apply for his service record? As you all know, surviving records of men who served in WW1 and who left the army before 1920 are held at Kew, and those who served post 1920 have their records at the MoD. Any guidance would be greatly appreciated. I have used the MoD next of kin request forms for my father's records as he served in WW2, but with my wife's great-grandfather serving in both wars I am unsure as to where I should approach for his records. Thank you all in advance, RRTB
Hello RRTB link below to apply for his service records if he was in the Home Guard. https://www.gov.uk/guidance/requests-for-personal-data-and-service-records#how-to-apply-for-home-guard-service-records also for your info http://www.staffshomeguard.co.uk/J9GeneralInformationSearchingforMembers.htm regards Clive
Hello Clive, and thank you for your links. I assume that as an instructor he would have had to join the Home Guard, so the links will be of great help. RRTB
