Southport, the nearest town to where I live has a rather good War Memorial. I have asked a question about Free Polish Air Force casualties before now.

Names are grouped according to unit, and two names are given for Home Guard. Cpl A J Passant and Captain C H Stewart.

Captain Charles Henry Stewart of 72nd County of Lancaster (Crosby) Bn. of the Home Guard died on 30th July 1941.

Passant is not a common name, and only 9 Passants, from all over the Empire/ Commonwealth died in WW1 and WW2 combined. However Cpl A J Passant is not listed at all. Any ideas?

Have you tried the local papers, most have a alphabetical index so, he sould not be difficult to find in their archives.

What you will find, rather like WW1 memorials & the CWGC, is that the individual was not on "active" service at the time of their death.... i.e. Passant may have been off-duty but killed by a falling building.

Unfortunately, as far I as I am aware, not on duty meant no entry on the CWGC. However, this does not stop the local memorial including their names.

    Hope this helps,

    Les

The Home Guard was one of the Recognised Civilian Organisations for War Grave purposes and CWGC commemoration.

As such casualties had to die both on duty and of a war cause or increased threat caused by war.

This is why many Home Guard, Merchant Navy etc dead do not qualify.
