Various reports on British Newspaper Archives say the first WW2 MM to a Home Guard was Glynn Jones in Sept 1940 for saving wounded men among bombing. Camberwell would have been in the thick of the blitz, so maybe for rescue/saving life. Working on an ack ack gun is also a possibility & Home Guards also took part in exercises with the regular army, possibly with live firing. From the Staffs Home Guard Web site "The first military award to the Home Guard, a Military Medal, is awarded to Volunteer Glyn Jones for his actions during an air raid on 12/13th July at an unspecified location." the date is given as 7th Sept 1940 The Home Guard of Great Britain: General Information - Timeline 1938-1945
Yes, he was awarded that in October 1940 before the official HG awards process began. He was indeed, the only HG MM winner of WW2. From the rest of the war, HGs were only awarded the BEM, OBE, GM, GC - the MM remained for the regular forces. The whole HG awards process in discussed in HAZARDOUS WORK An Account of the Decorations and Commendations Awarded to Members of the Home Guard in Recognition of Acts of Gallantry Performed on Duty 1940 - 1944 by J.D.
