It really is so sad - all the lottery heritage money knocking about and typical government and instituional bureaucracy gets in the way of our heritage. Is there any patriotism or national pride left in Britain I wonder? Seems our only ever hope are private investors with pots of spare cash...

I saw it advertised on ebay about a month ago for several million dollars. It is a real shame that we cannot preserve more of our naval heritage. A friend of mine is trying to save the Falklands War vessel HMS Fearless. Not only do you have to contend with the money factor, it's all the red tape that goes along with it. I hope that there will not be a time when the only way we can show our naval heritage, is through DVDs, videos and books. Just standing on board a ship from the Second World War allows you to feel a certain pride in the ships that were part of our navy, and a certain sorrow for all the lives lost at sea.

HMS Vengeance certainly needs saving for the nation.

Any idea of the current state of play?

    Ryan,
Thanks. I did see this earlier. Just wondered if there was a February update.
    Regards,

There is the old saying,"That no news is good news".i sincerely hope that in this case i hope it's true.

Strange how the government can get involved in fiasco's like the Dome, yet won't stump up the relatively small sum (in comparison to that thrown at the dome). To save an important piece of our heritage.or are they scared that our we are going to be accused of Imperialism, living on past glories etc.(mustn't look back, look forward).Obviously forgotten that with out our past, ther can be no future.

are they scared that our we are going to be accused of Imperialism, living on past glories etc.

I would have to agree with you Steven as many many stories covered in the nationals by people like Jeremy Clarkson or Max Hastings time and again point out how little we embrace our history comapred with other nations. We do seem to be scared to be proud of it in case we are accused of imperialism for example as you say.

I think recent government is more interested in presidency than monarchy and as such is not interested in military history and our past 'glories'. We are going about this the wrong way as Europe can kindly demonstrate, they embrace WW1 & WW2 as roads to peace rather than reliving war and the many museums etc badged now as 'peace museums' are testament to this. Heck the EU even gives pots of cash to regenerate these areas and educational resources...

Me wonders if the UK rebadges its plight for HMS Vengeance as a floating peace memorial we might get the cash from the EU ;)

Wishful thinking on all our parts.the only way i could see this happening is if it was a sure fire vote winner. At the moment the only way i can see HMS Vengeace been saved is with money from the private sector.Any individual who does, will only do it if there's money to be made, will a floating museum give a big enough return, without turning it into a floating theme park ??.

You bet! - I think it may just squeeze in the outer harbour nicely, might block a bit of the view for some of the fancy pads but hey, I think the view would improve...

Eyes down for a 'full house' B)
