I know very little indeed about the sinking of these two ships but felt compelled to post Rolls of Honour: extracted by using Geoff's search engine, by reason of the following:

I spoke to my father this week about his memories, some of which have faded over the years. He couldn't remember the name of the man in question but this is what he recalled about him:

"I worked with a bloke [post-war], ex-Royal Navy, can’t remember exactly where, maybe an open-cast mine in England somewhere. He was a young fella about my age and he had no teeth.

He had been on one of the two ships sent out by Churchill, you know, to fly the flag in the Far East, The Repulse or The Prince of Wales, don‘t know which one. Well, they had no air cover and dive bombers sunk them...

I don’t know now what exactly happened to them after that, but I asked him, “How did you lose your front teeth?” And he said that a Japanese guard had hit him - with the butt of his rifle - and knocked out every single one! It’s things like that I remember."

D for perhaps the best book on the loss of Force Z see Martin Middlebrook's excellent work "Battleship".

Churchill said that it was he had something "which could catch and sink anything" - sadly the two battlewagons had to sail without any carrier - I have a feeling that had the planned aircraft carrier been with them , she too would have been sunk.

In the August, 1936 issue of “The Fighting Forces” magazine, there is a review of a paper by Lt. Cdr. M. H. C. Young, R.N., in the May 1936 issue of the Journal of the Royal United Services Institute. It was titled “Aircraft Attacks or Gunfire Against Warships”. His “carefully worked out and obviously well-informed calculations” led to the following conclusions.

Level bombing: About 1% of hits may be expected, and “with three ships firing at each formation the chances are in favour of 94% of the attacking force being shot down before reaching the dropping position.”

Dive-bombing: 4% of hits and 60% shot down. Further, dive bombing “is not a vital (i.e. lethal) method of attack on battleships, since the 500lb bombs will not penetrate their decks.

Torpedo bombing: 15% of hits and 85% shot down. The conclusion was that, since each plane can carry only one torpedo, this casualty list of 85% practically rules out their practical utility.

Gunfire was regarded as “in every way superior to aircraft attack”.

With this kind of assessment, it is not surprising that the “Prince of Wales” and “Repulse” were sent out without air cover.

Ironically, Lt. Cdr. Young was killed during a Stuka dive-bombing raid on HMS Peregrine R.N.A.S. station at Ford, Sussex, on 18th August, 1940, aged 37. He is buried with another officer also killed in the raid in St. Mary’s Churchyard, East Preston.

Guess you´re right. The FAA, and in fact, all the allied air forces in the Far East in the hectic days after Pearl, didn´t stand a chance against Japanese kites.

Outclassed seems to be the right term for such a debacle.

The loss of Force Z was the final step in the much more complex history of British Far East defence policy in the period. To understand that I’d recommend Boyd’s “The Royal Navy in Eastern Waters: Linchpin of Victory 1935-1942”. It could have been much worse if events had taken place a few months later.

Hi Ewen, you caught my interest with the bold faced last sentence. Would this be reference to the Royal Navy basing the old R class battleships at Singapore. If so, do you think Phillips would have taken them as well as PoW and Repulse out into the China Sea, or was it suggesting something else?

Yes that is what I had in mind when I wrote that sentence.

I would need to go back to Boyd, but IIRC the Admiralty plan around Aug 1941 was to forward base what became the Eastern Fleet at Singapore as a deterrent to Japan and not just a defensive role based on Trincomalee to defend the DEI barrier. That would have involved all 4 R class plus Repulse and PoW. Other reinforcements were discussed including Nelson & Rodney and a carrier (Ark Royal even got a mention after a refit to complete in April 1942). But losses, refits etc got in the way.

Revenge arrived in the IO in Sept 1941, Royal Sovereign in Dec, Ramilles in Jan 1942, Resolution in Feb. Indomitable was diverted on the outbreak of war with Japan and arrived in the IO in Jan 1942 with Formidable & Illustrious leaving the U.K. in Feb & March to join her.

What seems clear from his research is that there is no evidence that Indomitable was ever designated to join Force Z.

Having a carrier with a decent sized air group (i.e. not Hermes) would, I believe, potentially have changed everything. You need only to look at the experience in the Med in 1941 with the ability of placing even Fulmars in the right place to break up attacks and put the enemy off his aim. Britain led the world at that time with controlling carrier fighters using radar. But it’s all speculation as no carrier was available.

Whether Phillips would have taken the Rs with him I don’t know. With them at Singapore who knows how the Japanese might have changed their plans. British and US policy was all about deterrence. Both were planning reinforcement of air & naval forces.

Historically, Japan deployed 2 of its fast Battleships with the Pearl Harbour task force and the other two as part of the covering forces for the Malayan operations. The other 6 slower BB were together around the Bonin Is (Iwo Jima) able to move east or west. And Yamato completed on 16 Dec 1941. How long for her to work up enough to join them? How would Japan change it’s warship dispositions in response to a strengthened Force Z? Do we end up with a Jutland of the east in 1942?

One snippet I came across recently was that the Martin Baltimore aircraft on order from the US were originally destined to reinforce the RAF in Malaya. First deliveries late 1941. They were diverted to the Middle East instead.

I also have Boyd's book, which I think is very good.

If we were a few months later, and that least two of the R's were available, I still don't think Phillips would have taken them north, unless he had an aircraft carrier (I agree, not Hermes) with him, and even then I'd say that would be very doubtful, as they were so slow, if nothing else. Having said that most of the time Phillips was cruising at 14-15 knots, so they could have gone.

Your quite right to consider Japans response. Phillips decision would have been framed around Japans reaction to the arrival of the R's. Kondo only had two Kongo class fast battleships. What might the Japanese have sent in reply to the R's, as with a quite serious battle line of 4-6 battleships, battlecruisers, the Japanese might have thought more along the lines of a major battle, the Kantai Kessen, or Decisive Battle Doctrine, is a very good question.

I think this is a case of it being announced orally and written orders to that effect being given later, probably when she reached Gibraltar at the end of her work up training. The acceptance that Indomitable had been selected for Singapore is 100% amongst naval historians so I think this is not an issue. It is still not understood by many that HMS Indomitable was never ever going to be at Singapore in time to sail with Force Z in December 1941. She had only just arrived in the Caribbean Sea to begin 3 weeks work up training when she ran aground. She was not en-route to Singapore when she was damaged. David Hamer the Naval Historian and former Naval Officer in his book Bombers Vs Battleships (published by Conway Maritime Press in 1999) states that had she not been damaged HMS Indomitable was due to finish her work up training on 22nd November 1941 and arrive at Gibraltar a week later. So she arrives at Gibraltar on the 29th November, let's say 3 days in harbour to refuel and re provision for the trip east, so she leaves port on 2nd December 1941( The day POW & Repulse arrive at Singapore) heading to the Far East via the Atlantic Ocean, South Africa & the Indian Ocean. She would have to fly not sail to Singapore to get there in time! Except that I do not believe that the orders to proceed to Singapore would have been given anyway, why not? Because on 13th November 1941 HMS Ark Royal the only operational Aircraft Carrier in the British Mediterranean Fleet was sunk by a German U Boat. So we have the Mediterranean Fleet without an Aircraft Carrier in a major war zone, and two weeks later the latest Fleet carrier in the Royal Navy arrives at Gibraltar on her way to still peaceful Singapore, and she is allowed to proceed? I doubt it very much. I believe Indomitable would have been ordered to join the Mediterranean Fleet and Singapore would have had to wait for a replacement. In real history once repaired Indomitable was used in the Indian Ocean and not the Mediterranean Sea, but by that time the Indian Ocean was a new war zone and had priority, at the end of November 1941 it was the Mediterranean Sea which would have had priority for HMS Indomitable.

More recent historians have come to challenge the traditional narrative that Indomitable had been selected for Singapore. Boyd devoted over two pages of his book plus over a page of notes refuting precisely this point.

Perhaps the best starting point is Admiral Pound’s letter to Churchill dated 28 August 1941 in which he set out the dispositions of capital ships and carriers that the Admiralty were then working to. In that Indomitable is shown becoming available in November 1941 and was allocated as part of Force H at Gibraltar. It also shows her at Trincomalee “in emergency”. Ark Royal is shown in that same paper at Trincomalee from April 1942.

Pound also went on to state that “Ark Royal is not shown in the dispositions, as she has to refit on relief by Indomitable and will not be available until April 1942”.

Please note that the RN Mediterranean Fleet was based on Alexandria in the eastern Med. The August plan showed Illustrious and Formidable allocated here from Jan & Feb 1942 respectively. Force H was a separate command based at Gibraltar, at the western end of the Med, and was so placed to be able to cover both the western Med and the Atlantic.Ark Royal was part of Force H prior to her sinking.

Boyd is worth quoting in full at this point:-

“…Nor did planners view a carrier as essential to operations in the South China Sea. Director of Plans stated at the end of September that, apart from the old light carrier Hermes in the Indian Ocean, no carrier was available for the Far East until April 1942. The new Indomitable could be moved from Force H where she was due on completion of work-up in Nov but he did not recommend it. This allocation of Indomitable to Force H was in line with the Admiralty dispositions agreed in late August, and notified to the prime minister by Pound. However, it was also conceded that Indomitable could be sent east in emergency.”

“There is a long standing belief that Indomitable was allocated to Force Z after the 20 October Defence Committee meeting, but was prevented from joining by running aground in Jamaica. The evidence does not support this(*). Indomitable never received orders to join Force Z prior to her grounding, and she could never have reached Singapore by early December, even without the grounding, given the timing of her planned work-up….”

(*) See Arthur Nicholson “Hostages to Fortune, Winston Churchill and the Loss of the Prince of Wales and Repulse” pages 41-44 published 2005.

He then uses the same reasoning as yourself in relation to this last point. But he then continues:-

“Furthermore, no Admiralty or joint planning staff papers from early October to mid-December show Indomitable allocated to the Eastern Fleet. Phillips gave no indication he anticipated her joining his fleet when he met with Hart on 6 December. The most compelling evidence that Indomitable was never allocated to Force Z is the First Lord’s secret session speech reporting on the loss of the force to Parliament on 19 December. Alexander spoke in place of the prime minister, who was by then en route to the United States. He stated: ‘The question has been raised as to why there was no aircraft carrier with our ships. The simple answer is that none was available.’ He added that Ark Royal had been sunk, Illustrious and Formidable were still under repair, Furious was in refit, Eagle in dock, and Victorious required by the Home Fleet. Indomitable was not mentioned in the speech, but did feature in the accompanying briefing notes. These stated that there were urgent calls to provide two modern carriers in the eastern Mediterranean and one for Force H. A pencil note stated that the only carrier available here was Indomitable, which was working up, but was now (17 December) en route for Durban. The note also stated that (prior to her loss) it was planned to send Ark Royal to the Eastern Fleet after completion of her refit in the United States about April 1942. This was again in accord with Pound’s August minute to the prime minister.”

“The most definitive final statement of planned Royal Navy strength in the eastern theatre (the combined Far East, Indian Ocean and Australasia areas) before the outbreak of the Far East war was issued on 7 December, the day before the attack on Malaya. This identified Royal Navy strength by warship category in two columns: planned strength in early 1942, and additional reinforcements that ‘may’ be sent later. Five battleships were listed in the early 1942 column (Prince of Wales and the four ‘R’ class), one battlecruiser (Repulse) and one aircraft carrier (clearly Hermes). One carrier was also listed in the ‘possible reinforcements’ column. This document, approved personally by Pound, confirms that that Indomitable was not yet formally allocated to the eastern theatre as late as 7 December.”

“Churchill certainly advocated the inclusion of a fleet carrier with the Force Z package on 17 Ocober, and it is possible that this triggered informal discussion within the Admiralty as to whether Indomitable might be added. Such discussion would be consistent with post-war claims by both Churchill and Alexander that Indomitable was supposed to join Force Z. However, if there was such a discussion, it never translated into firm plans or orders. The Admiralty did inform the prime minister on 17 October that it was intended to allocate Formidable and Illustrious to the Mediterranean once they completed their repairs in the United States at the end of the year. This may have been the result of a prime minister query over carrier allocation with an eye to the forthcoming Defence Committee meeting. However five weeks later, and with the Japanese threat ever more imminent, when the prime minister again asked Pound for thoughts on carrier distribution, there was no reference to Indomitable’s allocation to Force Z. Indeed, the prime minister said he was reluctant to ‘waste’ any modern carrier by sending it round the Cape at this stage, or at least until events in the Mediterranean clarified. It is also significant that the First Sea Lords’s later report on on the loss of Force Z, dated 25 January 1942, made no reference to Indomitable. It merely stated that there was ‘no aircraft carrier available except Victorious which was working up with the Home Fleet’. Given the overwhelming lack of evidence for the formal allocation of Indomitable to Force Z, there must be a suspicion that the story rests on dubious post facto attempts by key participants to suggest they were more proactive in addressing the Japanese air threat than they actually were.”

By October 1941 Ark Royal had a growing list of machinery defects and was badly in need of a refit. When she was sunk on 14 November 1941 she had just finished a delivery of badly needed Hurricanes to Malta. Had she not been sunk he next mission would have been another Malta run before the end of the month. The Hurricanes were already at Gibraltar and subsequentky had to be recrated and shipped to Takoradi in West Africa to be flown to Egypt. So her planned replacement by Indomitable at the end of November makes perfect sense. With her loss in November and Indomitable being sent east in December, Eagle had to be reallocated and the Force H carrier on completion of her refit at the end of Jan 1942. (In Pound's Aug 1941 note to Churchill, the plan had been to keep her in home waters in case support was required for the occupation of the Canary Islands, Operation Pilgrim).

John Jordan in a review of it in Warship 2018 wrote of Boyd's book:- "This book is a history game-changer in putting the Indian Ocean at the centre of Britain's war strategy as it eveolved from 1939 to 1942. It is well written and well researched". It is now available in paperback and well worth the read.
