All my grandfather served on this ship in1944 I am in the process of trying to get an Atlantic star for him as I believe Kirriemoor qualified He was already in possession of the 1939-45 star and Burma star and had qualified for defence and war medal due to service on HMS Barmill I know Kirriemoor went to Normandy for which he was awarded the F&G Star but I believe he maybe entitled to the Atlantic clasp as she was on convoy duties to at least Gibraltar and is shown entering and leaving Liverpool Any help greatly appreciated The reason for my interest is the mod did not issue his defence medal in 1948 and this was only issued last year, on his medal card it has written Atlantic? So I am thinking another oversight might have been made Regards James
James, Convoy MKS.49G departed Gib, 20 May 1944. Rendezvous with SL.158 on 21 May 1944 and arrived Liverpool 4 June 1944. HMS KIRRIEMOOR was on this convoy so if your g/father was aboard at that time then I believe you are correct to apply for the Atlantic Clasp. Regards Hugh
Does it state on his service record the dates and the name of the ship or is it just noted against an accounting base? If the ship name and dates noted, I don't see what the issue could be - it would be interesting to hear what their reasoning is. Regards Hugh
They only replied stating HMS Barmill did not qualify Both my grandfathers service record and the MoD own paperwork confirm Kirriemoor As I said I applied for his defence medal last year as his records clearly showed 6 months service Ceylon which qualified for defence medal
I think the problem may be that s.s. Kirriemoor was a merchant ship when she was assigned to Operation Neptune. Roy
Not sure why they mention HMS BARMILL with regard to qualification for the Atlantic Star as it is KIRRIMOOR that is specifically the ship in question for the award. There is evidence in the form of ADM 199/2191/104 to support that the ship sailed on that convoy. The rules also state that F & G time doesn't count but in his case that doesn't apply. Strictly speaking I think he should have had the Atlantic Star and the F & G Clasp as in my opinion he earned the Atlantic first. Having been down those roads before dealing with intransigence in the MN medal office all I can suggest is to keep plugging away - give them official documentary evidence to support your claim and if a satisfactory explanation is not forthcoming I would be taking it further. Have you got a decent MP? Regards Hugh
ADM 1/15788 - suggests she was still HMS during August/September of 1944 so not sure about that Roy. Also no MN crew agreements for 1944 or 1945 suggesting still under the Admiralty. Regards Hugh
Was listed as HMS, and had been since 1941 when she was out in Ceylon The only bit they could turn me down on is the 180 days service but there is another it that states only 1 day service if last star earnt as he was still on get until August/September then there is a case
I think they mentioned barmill as that was the argument I used originally but since found out that Kirriemoor was back in home waters in 1944 So I believe he is entitled so we will wait and see
It's strange. Convoyweb has her switching in different convoys and Winser has her Br(Runciman) as boom carrier, while her sister Fernmoor is down as HM boom carrier. Roy
