Im looking if there is a record of the crew on board HMS Havant when it was sunk en route to Dunkirk to play part in the evacuation.

I suspect that a friend of my Great Uncle John (who was aboard HMS Gloucester) was aboard the Havant but I cant confirm the ship name.

The friend went by the nickname ‘Pea’ Ayres and we know that he suffered a fractured skull, survived the sinking/scuttling after the ship was bombed by air. He recovered in Haslar Hospital, Gosport and probably would have been in his early twenties.

Ive learnt this information from letters written at the time by my Great Uncle, who heard the news while serving on HMS Gloucester.

Incidentally the ship is featured in the recent film Dunkirk.
