See Paul Lund and Harry Ludlam's Trawlers Go To War about the RN Patrol Service; it has quite a bit on the Patrol Service' role in boom defence and other coastal and inshore duties. Just received the book from amazon so will enjoy reading it. I have managed to find a photo of HMS kirriemoor but still looking for HMS Barmill. Did see a model of HMS Barmill for sale on ebay but comp crashed as i was placing a bid. have not found anything new out other then he qualified for the burma star whilst on barmill, he was also stationed at adul attol the secret far east base that the british retreated to from ceylon when the japs bombed pearl harbour. regards James
James are you sure you dont mean HMS Barhill?? Nope he served on HMS Barmill one of the bar class boom defence vessels, it is recorded in JJ Colledges ships of the royal navy and on the naval-history site i have traced Barmills movements. Regards James
Just need to find a photo of the ship. I never knew tracing his record could be so rewarding, the power of the internet never fails to amaze me, when i first joined bbc ww2 peoples war website as a researcher then site helper, the amount of info on boom defence was nothing, every year more and more info is released, i used to do a search on hms kirriemoor and get nothing and have now been able to trace her movements, and have managed to find a photo. Regards James
Hi HMS Barmill defended the boom at Ceylon and addu attol, when the british navy retrated to their secret far east base when the japs bombed pearl harbour,as they also bombed ceylon at the same time. Regards James
James, Might be a bit off topic but I believe LCTs (Tank Landing Craft) were sometimes used as boom defence vessels and sometimes as capital vessel anti-torpedo net tenders. Try WW2 Combined Operations (Geoff Slee) or The LST and Landing Craft Association home page (Tony Chapman). Best of luck, Mike

Rusty, Thank you for your reply. I have a good friend who was WW2 RN and here is his photo and Medals. Served on several aircraft carriers when attached to the Fleet Air Arm and was on HMS Eagle when sunk by a U-Boat in thwe Med. He received injuries from the third torpedo hit which struck the ship near to his positioon. He is now profoundly deaf and his eyesight is rapidly failing. I just found out the other day that he was a first class shot and represented Wales many times and is extremelx proud of his Welsh shooting badge which he sports on his blazer. The Arctic convoys were his worst experiences he says! not the being torpedoed and shipwrecked. Regards Tom Regards Tom

John, You will soon get the hang of navigating your way around the site. A good link on the front page is the FAQ (Frequently asked questions) button. Just click on the button and look for a question which is what you wish to ask and you will get advise. Failing that PM me or ask for help by opening a new thread. Regards Tom
Here are a few more pictures of RN Boom Defence Vessels that are not from the Bar-Class in case anyone did not realise that there were many other classes of these useful little ships...
