Does anyone have a copy of this book 'History of the Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders 5th Battalion (91st Anti-Tank Regiment) 1939-45 by Major Desmond Flower'?

I am after a better scan/info on a wrecked Panther from EPSOM that appears in the book. It is captioned 'the non runner' which leads me to believe there was another which was a 'runner'.

I have it in front of me, with a view to answering some stranger's query as to how my father met his end! Give me a little more detail and I'll look!

The image in question faces page 132. The page has three photos - at the top Carpiquet airfiefd, in the middle "Epsom Downs" looking towards Rauray where the trouble came from, and at the bottom The Haut du Bosq. The non-runner is a Panther. There is no IWM or other picture credit to any of the three. I can do a scan, but I doubt it'd be much better than you have already.

If possible would like all the pages dealing with EPSOM 25 June-July 2nd. And scans of all the pics. They are not IWM photos. There is at least 1 more pic in the book of another Panther. Any credit given for the photos?

Now I am going to treat you like a novice here so humour me.

Text scans can be fairly low res (200-300 dpi) and be sure to scan in BW. Scanning a BW pic as a colour pic gives you an image far bigger than it needs to be.

For the photos scan in BW & de-screen mode. All scanners have such a setting and it gets rid of all the interference patterns that blight most copied pics. Scan the photos in the highest resolution you can manage say 600dpi +. I can send my email for delivery!

    Not asking much am I?

Where are you located? This looks like a fairly long job. If you feel able to reveal an e-mail to me, I'll come back to you there and see what I can do.

Scans done to my reasonable satisfaction, if not yours! e-mail to which to send, please!

It seems I rattled you with the scanner info! It would take less than 4-5 clicks and under a minute to maximise a scanner. If you scan a printed (in a book) photo at high res then all the 'dots' that make up the photo stand out. The 'de-screen' option makes it slightly blurry and this 'hides' the dots. Proper photos do not need to be de-screened.

de-screning sounds a good idea, but Epson-Scan doesn't seem to offer it. While I don't know what you want to do with the photos, they look OK to me. "Black & White" to me looks all jerky, so I use 8-bit greyscale which seems to me to work.

I look forward (hopefully) to hearing from you that these are acceptable, whereupon I'll delete at this end.

I'll be driving down to England on Monday, hence my query as to where you are, lest I could simply lend you the book, but, hey, I've done it now.

    regards

Hi there, I know this may be a long shot but I am actually looking for this same book "History of the Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders 5th Battalion (91st Anti-Tank Regiment) 1939-45 by Major Desmond Flower' as my Great Grandfather and his brother are named in it and I was hoping to find a copy to gift it to my gran for her birthday. My gran has been looking for it for years as he was killed just days after she was born and doesn't have much about him and doesn't use the internet so I'd thought I'd do a bit of research for her as a surprise. If anyone knows where or how I could find it it would be a great help! I know there's only a few copies but I am hopeful to find one! Thank you!

    Ouch!
Sutherland Highlanders by Flower - AbeBooks

Pricing of regimental histories can be quite variable - not long ago, the 2nd Bn A&SH volume was reasonable, at the moment it seems to have shot up again.
If you're prepared to lurk on ABEbooks, Amazon and Ebay for a while you can get lucky. Some sites allow you to set up a 'wants list' which might help, but these long titles are prone to being entered in different ways. I'd try searching on just Sutherland Highlanders and combinations of Flower, Nelson and Battalion (Nelson being the publisher) to avoid too tight or too loose a search.

Is it normal if he was the same Lt. col Cockburn in November 44 and on 6 june 44 or it is a mistake ?

It is the same man. These are the dates from Appendix I, where all officers are listed. There is no index in the almost 400 page book, so it would be time consuming to see when Tweedle, the 2 i/c, took over from Cockburn.
