Hi all, very interesting site, what I've seen so far. My Father served with the 51st Highland Division 1939-1946. He never spoke of his experiences until his last few years, and i have been hooked ever since. I have used some of his stories and pictures etc + from other veterans to compile a website. (www.keep-em-moving.com) I have interest in Military history in general and ww2 in particular. Looking forward to the various discussions. regards Richard Sands (seems I posted this in a reply to Jarnob intro, I'll get the hang of things,...eventually)
Hi Richard. Welcome. It's a great place and good fun. Most of us are friendly. Sometimes it gets heated but that's half the fun. Enjoy. Look forward to reading your threads and replies.
Welcome to the site and my compliments on a very informative website. Well done. You must be very proud of your father.
Welcome Richard, My father was fairly tight lipped about his participation as well until I was about 20. I suppose that 30 years gave him time to get over his wanting to forget phase.
Richard, Welcome to ww2talk. Your site is indeed a great tribute to your father and the HD. I have just been on the phone to my mentor, Richard Doherty to tell him about your great site. He has just finished writing a book on the history of the HD. It should be generally available next month. “Prior to the Battle of El Alamein the 51st Highland Division arrived. They posted signs everywhere, A Coy, B Coy and 51st HD. We called them the Highway Decorators. Everyone else knew the place like the back of their hands. Then on October 23rd 1942, the battle of El Alamein started at 2240hrs. The British offensive was launched with just over 800 guns firing a barrage that lasted 15 minutes. Within 12 days, on November 4th 1942, the Axis retreated out of Egypt into Tunisia. Tobruk was retaken by the Allies on November 12th 1942”. Richard, what an absolutely brilliant website. It is a must for everyone on this Forum. Try and put a link to it in your signature, then others will be more aware of it. You must be so proud of your Dad. God Bless Him.
Welcome aboard, and thank you for your father's service and sacrifice for Crown and Country. I bookmarked your site!
