Hi My name is Liz and I hope you don't mind me joining your forum. It came highly recommended by Paul Reed from a family history forum I am with. I will apologise now as I do not have any of WW2 apart from what I learnt at school etc and from listening to my Mum who lived through the war. so I feel a little guilty that I probabably can't offer anything back. The reason I am here is because I would love to find out more about what my Dad experienced during the war. He died in 1964 when I was 7 and talked very little about the war. My Mum remarried in 1966 and we were not allowed to talk about Dad after that and lost touch with his brother and sisters! I have his army number, and know he was in the Army Service Corp and that he went out to Aden very early and stayed in Africa until the end of the war. I think he worked with the vehicles and I have heard he was a RSM but haven't seen any documentation to prove this. I do have some photos of him in uniform and one of him with a group of other men apparently made up of different groups (you can see I am not very army literate) as most of the others had been killed. I apologise again for sneaking onto your forum but do hope you will be able to help.
Hello Lizzie, Welcome to our site. I found RASC very hard to research. Can you post the photos here so we can see if there are any clues . Have you sent off for his Service Records yet? Owen
Hi Liz, You are most welcome. This forum is far from a closed shop. They even let Aussies like me in the door. Good luck with your quest.
Wow that was quick!! thanks for all your kind comments so far!! Could someone please tell me how to post a photo here? For the record my Dad was called Ernest Kitchener Percival - can't be many of them around!! He was born in 1915 just as his Dad went off to France!!
Hi Lizzy, At the bottom of your intended post......click go advanced- Then go down until you find manage attachments and click This takes you to a choice of 2 If from your computer--search until you find the file and double click it and click upload....this takes varying time to load. When loaded go to your post and click the key icon on the top in between the smilee face and the left handed arrow (go back) Hope you can follow this!
Thanks Spidge for that, can't believe I am talking to someone in Australia!! Bet it is warmer than here
Forgot to say my Dad is the one in the middle row with the dog on his knee. I do have 2 more of him on his own in uniform, one in the UK and one taken in Aden. Its amazing what I can remember him telling me now I really think about it.
Lizzie, Have a look at this thread and send of for his records. It'll be awhile before you get them but it'll be worth it. Click here>>>>http://www.ww2talk.com/forum/searching-someone/3105-ww2-service-records-address.html
Cheers Owen I will do that now. Can't believe how much help yo have all been. Love your strap line "under the stairs" my dog is there at the moment which means it is either going to rain very heavy soon or thunder or both!!
Thanks Spidge for that, can't believe I am talking to someone in Australia!! Bet it is warmer than here No. 11 degrees celcius today. We had lots of much needed rain yesterday. It is the middle of winter!
Hi L iz, welcoem to the forum. The Ossies are merely here on day release You say your dad was RASC. This means he was probably attached to other regiments as and where drivers etc were needed. The RASC got around a fair bit. My Grandfather was one, and making sense of his service records is proving somewhat tricky. You'll get a photocopy of his records (which isn't always of the top quality) including his service promotions, or demotions, fines, punishments, and who he was attached to and when. When you have this, throw a few details towards our Army boys and they'll fill in the gaps for you. Even worth finding the museums for the regiments he was attached to and contacting them for more details from their regimental diaries. As to not knowing much about WW2, none of us really did till we joined. Its amazing what you'll learn.
Hi Kitty Thanks for your info, I have never been able to find out if Dad was Green Howards or DLI so I will send for his records and they will probably tell me. You are right a visit to the museum should be good once I find out who he was attached to. also I will probably have loads more questions for everyone once I find out abit more about where he was. I have always shyed away from joining a forum like this because everyone seems so knowledgable - but so far everyone has been really helpful. I think I will also track down my brother and see if he still has Dad's medals I am sure that is where they went!
I have never been able to find out if Dad was Green Howards or DLI He was neither, like you say he was RASC. He would be RASC no matter who he drove for.
