    Hi
I was a member of the forum a few years ago, but forgot my details and have no access to emails to recover the details so have had to create another account.

My Gt Uncle was in the 1st Battalion Irish guards (Leonard Sydney Mellish) and for a while have wanted to do something about his time in the guards and have decided to make a documentary based on official records of the regiment held at the NA.

I recall DBF having a huge wealth of knowledge and had provided lots of information.

Are there any other sources of information, personal diaries that have been digitised etc etc anywhere? I am down a rabbit hole and find g it hard to get back out hahaha.

If you are around DBF please feel free to drop me a line as im hoping this project will expand.

So this be you then I reckon:

    Hi to all

You predate me, but a hearty welcome back Andy.

Oh, if you prefix the DBF with @, (i.e. as one word), it will alert Diane.

    It sure was lol
Every year I keep saying I will do something for him and never got around to it. So with the advent of technology I am hoping to do him some justice and other WW2 stories from across the forces, so a big project ahead when I get the time. Also looking at going to Tunisia to say Hi in person.

    See: https://www.cwgc.org/find-records/find-war-dead/casualty-details/2196758/leonard-sydney-mellish/

Service Number: 2719746; died 27 April 1943, 23 years old

A 2009 thread by an A J Mellish, which is possibly you: Hi to all

Post 14 by dbf in: 1st Battalion Irish Guards

There are several other threads where his Service Number appears, but at glance only those two threads contain more than the basic details.

Currently using his given name he does not appear on The National Archives site (TNA). That may mean his record is still with the MoD or it is with TNA being processed for release. If you follow the weblink given you can ask where it is and they will reply. See: Get a copy of military records of service

It would seem we are traveling a parallel path!
Some years ago I signed up looking for information on my grandfather GDSMN TJ Megaw.
Yesterday my wife signed up for Ancestry.com and it prompted me to restart my search....this was the first thread I came across.

GDSMN TJ Megaw was KIA 27 Apr 43 at The Battle of the Bou (sound familiar?) I also would like to travel to Tunisia and walk the ground. Thank you Takrouna for the wealth of information I've seen so far.
Not sure if you have seen this thread which mentions your relative:
1st Battalion IRISH GUARDS - North Africa, Missing Personnel file

Hopefully I can get some travel information and on the ground advice from these forums for a potential trip in 2026. I'm in Australia.

    Cheers
    Chris

    Mechoes.

If you search here using the simple search option (top right) with 2718459 it will identify several threads.
