Despite all the helpful RAF lists to be found on the world wide web thingy, I am stymied by two units appearing on a man's (an armourer) service record.. I'd be grateful for a clue to the units and locations if poss: (Oct 42) 3 G A S (or could be G H S) the first and last letters are clear. (Comes immediately after 14 Recruits Centre) and before 10 School of Tech Trg (Jun 44) 3501 SU or could be 3051 SU, the clerk has put a "swap" sign over the second and third number Thanks in anticipation Max PS Edited,
Thank you Alieneyes. I've just looked back at my search terms on the NA site and I foolishly kept using SU rather than servicing!!! I creep way embarrassed! Thanks again. Max
Where you are stumped by an abbreviation it would help to post an image rather than your best guess. Context of postings before/after and the reason helps narrow down the multitude of possible units. Sounds like it is a short posting while awaiting space on a course at the School becoming available. Reason of HH and duration would help in determining how much overall importance the unit was to his service history. Cross ref to Postings/Mustering and Conduct sections will indicate why he was there. The big picture is the thing rather than microscopic view. Ross
Ross - you are absolutely right and your advice about cross referencing other parts of the records is something I have myself advised in the context of army records (with which I am much more familiar).so I hang my head in shame.. The image I have is in two parts with the line between the two sides of the sheet running right down the middle of the mustering so I need to manipulate it, back when I've wrestled with the PDFs! Max
Herewith a scan including the units, duration, reason and the mustering detail. Hopefully this will allow identification and location of 3 G AS (or G H S).
Ahh..it's one of those.. The first batch of entries are out of sequence - the clerk was so used to writing the same group after the typed 1 RC that he got muddled and the file wrapper (Form 543) was not changed. The enclosures would have made the error clear. The clue is after No.275 posting in Jan 1942. The entry for admission to SSQ at St Athan is dated 21 Oct 1941 (confirmed as 1941 by the Authority) So it looks like while at No.14 RC he was sent to a medical establishment (possibly No.3 General Hospital Surgery? not No.3 BGH as this was up in Glasgow) for some reason then returned to RAF care at SSQ St Athans. From SSQ St Athans he then went on to complete his technical training at No.10 School of Technical Training and mustering supports this with a trade date of 15 Jan 1942. Ross
All - Your help on this thread and the earlier WAAF record thread enabled me to complete the "translation" of an acquaintance's parents' service records. She has asked me to pass on her thanks which I gladly do. Max
