    Hi
I recently visited the Public Records Office in Kew, and took a picture of the attached document relating to a man who's General Service Medal (Palestine clasp) I have.
I can't make head or tail out of the card, any idea what it all means? There was nothing else with it. :salut:

    Thanks
    Steve

    Hi,

Your man’s service file is also available via UK National Archives.

The posted document appears to be a MI9 index card filed under WO 208/5274/2820 used by MI9 to review an Escape & Evasion report connected to Pte Walker - it is unclear to me whether the report is by him or mentions him.

The handwritten text at the bottom has an unhelpful “punch hole” through a key word but my interpretation of the bottom line is “Nil assessment of violation of security rules” - with NFA stamped top right.

There is a link to another NA reference -
WO208/3328-3335 that you might want to investigate.

If he didn’t complete the E&E report and is merely mentioned in one completed by an unnamed soldier you may want to look on Ancestry for his post liberation questionnaire.

If he did complete an E&E a report it does not appear to be held/indexed by UK NA.

It might be helpful to obtain his service record.

Hopefully others may have more knowledge on this subject.

Thanks Steve, will look further into that. His service record is closed until 2033, but it's a long game :D

    Cheers

If you submit proof of death NA will open the service file.

    Thanks Steve.
Do you know if I email that to them prior to booking my next visit, so they then unlock it as such to be available in my order?

    Hi,

If you mean can you examine the service file on-site at Kew the answer is no. NA have a different access process for closed service records -

    https://discovery.nationalarchives.gov.uk/details/r/C18425967

Open the link and there is a black box with “Request search of closed record” or similar words. Click on that and you get an online form to complete and the option to attach a copy image of the death certificate - you need to do so.

NA will then review the file to see what if anything can be released now - medical & discipline firms are usually withheld and some forms are partially redacted - often names of living relatives.

If I was you I’d request a full file - cost £48 plus £1 for every page provided rather than the standard file at £42 as only the full file will contain B103 forms.

It can take a couple of months for the file to be sent to you by email.
