What's your opinion of the McGregor pics?

Think it is possible.Looks the same for me. I can't find the book on the moment but are McGregor and Bates in the same troop??

I've checked "Remember Arnhem" by Fairley and McGregor was in 'C' Troop but there is no mention anywhere of Bates?

Came across this while searching for another Bates. There's a video at ParaData with clip of same three men about 2/3rds way through.

A biographical account of a Trooper John William Bateman of the Support Troop can be read here on the Peg Archive. Can't find his picture anywhere.

Lt. Christie died in Bateman's arms and Trooper Irala of D Troop was shot up in the same action on the 20th. He died on the 22nd at St. Elisabeth Hospital. I can see some similarities between Irala and Gordon Bates, but I am not entirely convinced. I haven't come across a photo of the Support Troop as yet.

Another one for you chaps! I have two pics of men from 1 Para and there is a Trooper (or Private) Lionel Brown in one and a "T. Brown" in the other. The first pic is from August 1942 and the second was taken in Italy in 1943. I know for a fact that Trooper Lionel Brown (in the August 1942 pic) was in Italy with 1 Para as he was taken POW and subsequently killed by his captors.
My question is, could the "T. Brown" in the Italy 1943 pic be the same chap or a relative etc etc?

    Over to you! :D..........

Paul, not sure its the same guy but for sure they could be Brothers as there is definetly a very close resemblence, and I have a second query in the second pic seated in the front the Para named Banner would you have a full name for him? this is why I ask........."I remember mentioned was a Joe Banner or something similar that Dad spoke of". http://www.ww2talk.com/forum/searching-someone-military-genealogy/27893-help-paratrooper-names-5.html#post313499

Certainly does John! I wonder if they all had their pics done on the same day? Do you have any details on your one, unit, names etc?

    All the best..........:)

It was given to me by Roy Brown (known as "Tony") - as far as I can recall he identified himself as 2nd row from back to the left of the crease. There's good photos of Tony in De Zwarte Herfst (page 169). He's the L/Cpl to the right in David Dobie's wedding photo.
He was a neighbour and we had many long and interesting chats about his time with 1 Para (he was one of the originals). Sadly he died on Boxing Day a few years back.

Cheers John. Would that be L.Cpl Roy A. Brown, 6344421, who escaped on Pegasus 1? I have a copy of De Zwarte Herfst but I haven't looked at it yet (it's all Dutch to me!)............

Yes - he evaded with "Nobby" Hall after being spirited out of St Elisabeth Hospital by the Kuik brothers who were later murdered by the Germans on the golf course. Paul Vroemen, author of De Zwarte Herfst, told me how he was with the brothers when they were stopped - he was allowed to go.

I've just dug out my copy and had a look at the pics you mentioned. The one of Lt. Col Dobie's wedding is very nice.
I guess Paul Vroeman had someone looking after him that day. Thanks for your help mate :)......

I hope you don't mind John but I've managed to put one definite name to the pic you posted. Lt. Richard J. "Jock" Gammon, inventor of the "Gammon Bomb".

I'm sure you've noticed this before John but the fella on the far right, third row from the back looks as if he should still be in Junior School! Any idea who he is?

Comparing your pic to the ones in De Zwarte Herst, I think Roy Brown is on the right of the crease (as we look at it!) What do you think?

As I said I always thought he had said to the left of the crease.

Sorry I don't know the short fellow - he was possibly taller when he started parachuting but had a couple of bad landings (Forgot to roll?)
