Please can someone help....I have come across my grandfathers service records from world war 2. He was with the RAF and worked with the construction of runways, roads etc. His RAF trade was a concreter. In the overseas service it is recorded that between 14-06-45 to 14-09-45 he was based in Norway and between 23-09-45 and 23-09-46 he was at BLA. Does anyone know what BLA stands for? I am also trying to find out what work he would have been doing also. My mother thinks he was at RAF Little Rissington also but she does not know the reason. Thank you in advance.
Do you have any information on the airfield construction wing or squadron he was with, as this may help pin down his movements? Regards Pete
Thank you so much for your responses. My Grandfather was an LAC and his service number was 1412082. He served in the RAFVR. On the front of his servce and release book it says service group number 40. It also refers to the No. 104 Dispersal Centre, Hednesford. He never spoke about the war with his family and was a private person. What type of things would they have faced working with the British Liberation Army and where could he have been based in 1945-46. Many thanks, Sarah
Sarah Whilst Rich Payne's interpretation of the initials BLA are quite corruptly interpreted - we , out in Italy had different interpretation as they all seemed to have leave every ten minutes - whereas we never had leave for three and more years in some cases - we therefore called it the BRITISH LEAVE ARMY…the "40' would refer to his discharge time - and he would have been all over the place at times… Cheers Cheers
