Hello All I have been looking into my great uncles military records to try and pin point when it was he died. He was part of the BEF in the Grenadier Guards 3rd BN, 4 Company who fought at the River Escaut in Belgium. His records show that he died of his wounds on the 28th of May 1940 but there are other notes on his records that make me think he might have died earlier than that, and having read the Guards VC Blitzkvieg 1940 which documents that battle well I think he may have been killed on the 21st which is when the Germans first attacked and attacked 4 company hard. Can anyone give me a clue as to why his attached records would show TRANSFRRED ( MIssing) then Died ( Enermy Action ) and then Finally Died Of Wounds. Maybe it was all in the confusion of being so busy or that he was hit on the 21st but died on the 28th and in the section of Unit whereit mostly say 3rd ,why it says "Y". Any help would be appreicated. Regards Dan View attachment 20140417134321.pdf
Hi, There is a thread on X & Y lists on the forum. Basically they detail how men are "accounted for" when no longer "effective". I haven't searched CWGC - was your relative buried or is he commemorated on a memorial? If he is commemorated on a memorial to the missing there are files in the NA on missing men as enquiries were always made to ascertain the precise circumstances. That may impact on the possible confusion in his records - although it may simply be an honest entry made by a clerk based on the information known at the date of the entry being made. Regards Steve Y
Sorry can someone point me in the direction of the thread regarding yx and y lists as a I am struggling to find it ? Thnaks
