Hello, The attached photo is all the information that we have on my wife's great uncle's WWII service. Pte Neil McCormick 2386354 B Company 5 Platoon Re-allocation All Arms CME. I cannot find out any information on what 'Re-allocation all arms CME' means, nor have I heard of this before in researching WWI or WWII - perhaps I am being daft. Can anyone propose any ideas of what sort of unit he served in? Furthermore, the Christmas cards focus on the Med rather than France/Germany - i suppose this would mean that he was serving in Italy in December 1944? Thank you
Graham, I believe your CME is actually CMF, Central Mediterranean Forces. War Office: Central Mediterranean Forces, (British Element): War Diaries, Second World War | The National Archives Regards, Dave
Re-allocation centres (all arms) appear to have been places for the treatment/rehabilitation of battle fatigue. Googling around, I struggled to find anything online apart from three references to academic paper citations like this one: and this mention: Terry Copp & Bill McAndrew (1990) Battle Exhaustion: Soldiers and Psychiatrists in the Canadian Army 1939-45. McGill-Queen's University Press Anyway, good luck with your research - I know from experience it can be a slow process, but one which progresses in jumps. Hopefully, this is a start, at least! Cheers, Pat
