    An American tag, presumably? No 'T' number on it?

    As a guess,therefore, I'd say there was no 'notch' in it either, making it a post-1960 issue (but pre-July 1969 numbering change)

    However, to 'translate'...

    BEHNKEN, PERRY E ... the owner's name
    RA-15236407 ...... his 'Regular Army' number ('RA' usually indicates post-WW2...most RA prefixed tags I've encountered are Korean and Vietnam war era, but the Korean war ones still have the WW2 style 'T' date).Number would (if it did happen to be WW2) indicate his origins being in the 5th Corps area (Ohio, W.Virginia, Indiana, Kentucky). Not sure if this remained the same post-war
    A .......his blood group
    P ....... his religion (protestant)

    To add to this information concerning US dog tags, there were several prefixes for the service numbers;

    US - the service member is a draftee
    NG - the service member is a National Guardsman
    ER - the service member is a member of the Enlisted Reserve

    Also, the service number has been replaced with the individuals social security number, and all the prefixes have been dropped.

    Recently there was a move within the US military to discontinue the use of dog tags altogether. The bean counters deemed them outdated and obsolete, favoring microchips implanted with pertinent information of the service member in question. The old generals went ballistic over this measure and dog tags were retained.
