Hi all Was wondering if anyone could help me deciper the units on this part of mt grandfathers service record. I have zoomed the image in to the part in question... The first is Br A S Paris, which I know, although exactly where they were based in Paris I would still love to know... Then the problem ones... Underneath it looks like 1830 Crane(?) TPT RASC And below that 4 Ord M....? Coy Then all is well again with Catering Pool and HQ BAOR. Anyone able to shed any light on the units please? Thanks Steve
Here we go: 1830 Platoon, Royal Army Service Corps - they were an independent platoon and 'crane transport' may well have been their role. The war diaries (1944 1945) ought to confirm that. 4 Ordnance Maintenance Company, Royal Army Ordnance Corps. War diaries: 1944 1945
My address was Air HQ (Ops), BAFO, BAOR Air Headquarters (Operations), British Air Forces of Occupation, British Army on the Rhine. Sorry to be picky, but "of" seems to have crept in of late, or perhaps it changed after I was demobbed from there in Jan 1948!
Doc D- perhaps if you wait ten minutes it will change again… the world appears full of people who want to change things…why I don't know and I doubt that they know themselves... Cheers
Steve, does this fit? A Crane Transport Platoon. 21 Army Group. War Establishment XIV/1830/1. September 1944. Two RASC Crane Platoons were formed during September and were to form part of a General Transport Company (Amphibious) for the operation of cranes in the transhipment area. The platoon was self administering but was affiliated to a nearby workshop for workshop maintenance. In December the platoons were despatched to the advance base depots as they were no longer required for work on the beaches or in the transhipment areas. Mike You are a star, that fits perfectly and that they have two ACC cooks attached fits absolutely perfectly. Really appreciate that Steve
