Hi I have been trying to trace my grandfathers ww2 journey of which I have limited info. Can anyone help? I have the following info only:
    Name: Ceil Roy Smith (pte)
    Based in Burma 1944
I can make out the following letters from a letter he sent to my grand mother; 6 DRC PTU, India Command
    I think he drove ambulances
I also think his service number was 6020252 but I can’t find anything under that so I maybe wrong.
Thanks in advance should anyone have a clue.!

    Hi

Applying for his service records will be the best way to go, - Get a copy of military service records
6020252 suggests he joined Essex Regiment as he is in the number range 5998001 - 6076000
    regards

Apply to the MOD Glasgow for his Service Records: they are the only people who will have comprehensive information about him. You simply fill in two forms - downloadable from their web site - and post them.

    Hello Dan

As stated above the only place you will find any info is via the official government link by completing the forms and sending off
you only require date of birth and copy of his death certificate you do not require his service number

Get a copy of military service records

    read it and apply
do not get sucked into sites on the internet promising his service records you will spend and be conned out of it.

The number you have given shows

The army number: 6020252 indicates that the soldier's original unit or date joined was:

    "Essex Regiment"

...but bear in mind that that would have been his initial 'destination' and not necessarily where he ended up serving. Only his Service Records will reveal all.

    Hi Dan,
To narrow things down, do you know his DOB/Death, where he was born etc ?

    Graham.
