All, I was wondering if anyone can confirm what Battalion my relative served in? Based on what has been passed to me by my family, it has always been said that he was captured at Dunkirk (Cassel?) and spent the rest of the war as a POW. I have obtained the below information from the POW records that Ancestry have just released - Name: C W Claridge (Charles was his first name, we assume that his middle name was William?) Rank: Private Army Number: 5391159 Regiment: Oxfordshire and Buckinghamshire Light Infantry POW Number: 270810 Camp Type: Stalag Camp Number: IV-G Camp Location: Oschatz, Saxony Record Office: Infantry Record Office, Warwick Record Office Number: 21 Based on what I have read up on thus far, I believe he may of been a member of the 4th Battalion and involved in the action at Cassel - has anyone got access to the 4th Battalion war diaries? if so are there any nominal roles that could confirm? Many Thanks, Jack.
Jack, I have found Charles listed in the Casualty reports on FindMyPast, as being declared missing on 15 January, 1944 in North Africa and serving with the 7th Ox & Bucks. Mark
Hi Service records would be your best bet to confirm his unit(s) during WW2 and when he was captured. You could also check if he completed a POW Liberation report, I do these for free if you order the war diary covering capture from me but we don't know the date of capture or unit 100% going by what Mark has posted. I have the war diary and regimental history covering 1940 but it's unlikely to mention him by name. There is also the regimental missing men file which I have but its too thick for me to read through when the unit is not known 100%. What makes you think Cassel and 4th Bn OBLI? Regards Andy
