Help required Please ! New to site so apologies if posting in wrong forum area. I wish to trace medal records of my Father L A Robinson CQMS Royal Engineers 260 I believe. He was awarded the Oak Leaf but I am unsure what for. He told me it was his name was pulled from a hat at the time............. I do not know where to start my research and would appreciate pointing in the right direction. A family member recalls something relevant to the Arnhem river crossing but obviously I would like confirmation about how and what he did to be awarded and mentioned in London Gazette. Your pointers will be very much appreciated. With respect S Robinson

If you need them copying there are a few members on here that can do it for a reasonable fee , who come highly recommended.
Stewart, if you need any help with obtaining war diaries or other files from the National Archives, I offer a photographic service at 8p per page. Details here: Arcre - ARCRE - Frequently Asked Questions Best wishes, Lee

Help with records please. Having had reply from Owen on relevant records I have looked at the files but these are not down loadable at present, therefore do I simply apply online for request or would any member have copies of the doc's as shown below ? For peace of mind you could ask the National Archives for a quote to copy them for you but make sure you are sitting down when you read their reply. Lee can copy them for you at a fraction of the price the National Archives will charge.
Stewart As you say 260 Field Coy was involved in Operation Berlin, the rescue of the 1st Airborne Division from the pocket at Oosterbeek on the night of 25/26th September 1944. Often their part is overlooked with most of the credit going to the 23rd Canadian Engineers who had the advantage of storm boats, equipped with outboard motors, that were able to make more crossings. Thanks Lee may well get back to you, but have long way to go yet, especially not even knowing his service number which would help of course. regards Stewart If you could supply his full name then it might be possible to track down his service number in the London Gazette
If you could supply his full name then it might be possible to track down his service number in the London Gazette Think I may have found his service number from Military Records, Military War Articles & Forces History Data - Forces War Records but not 100% convinced of accuracy of this site at present, perhaps because its still early days in my research. however As much detail as I know Lewis Alfred Robinson DOB: 30.01.1920 Served with Royal Engineers 1939 - 1945 Service No 2015423 ! Perhaps 260 Field Coy Remember his mention of Arnhem and Nijmegen Found in London Gazette MID 4th April 1946 Have his medals of War Medal 1939–45 Defence Medal 1939–1945 Star Is there a royal Engineers site which will confirm his records or is MOD only place for copy of records ? Thanks and regards Stewart Robinson PS: Photo on my posts are of the great man IMO about 1960
You don't need his service number to apply for his service records if you know his date of birth. The MoD are the ONLY people that have WW2 Service Records. Cheers Andy

Have looked at some of your file copies from link page 48 onwards. No doubt I will be intouch again. How often do you visit to gain copies of diaries ? Regards Stewart
I try and go a couple of times a month but Lee above is your man if you need anything from Kew. He was here first and offers a very similiar service to me Stewart, if you need any help with obtaining war diaries or other files from the National Archives, I offer a photographic service at 8p per page. The 204th and 260th were pissed when they heard the BBC say that it was the RCE who did the operation.
