RE Grenade An embroidered grenade was first worn on the tail of an RE Officer's full dress scarlet coatee in 1824, and the following year a brass grenade was introduced for Other Ranks of the Royal Sappers and Miners.
The grenade was later worn on the epaulet and then on the collar. The number of flames to the grenade has varied, but in 1922 a nine-flamed grenade, with the motto Ubique below it, was authorized.
The Royal Artillery grenade is similar, but has only seven flames.
    Hello again,
I've tried enlarging and sharpening your picture as much as possible on photoshop but the definition isn't there to count flames on the 400k file. If the original is reasonably sharp you might get lucky with a (powerful) magnifying glass, often surprising how much detail is buried in silver halide.

    Thanks for trying.

I am happy that he is RA, if I can find out which division he was in, other than the MOD, how would I find out when and where he may have been during the war? As I said in a previous post there is a medal with Cherbourg on it, what would that tie in with. Baring in mind here I have no knowledge of WW2 at all.

Don't medals sometimes have the service number engraved around the edge?

Cap Badge wrong for RE. Stick with RA.
Tell MOD you are NoK !
    Until then we are guessing.
Men transferred around so much he could have been in several RA units.
He may have started his Service in one unit but I can guarentee he was in a different one before the end!

    Here. it's the War medalhttp://www.stephen-stratford.co.uk/wwii_medals.htm

This medal was awarded to all full-time personnel of the Armed Forces. Operational and non-operational service of at least 28 days counted. The Merchant Navy requirement stated that the 28 days minimum should be served at sea. The recipient was awarded this medal if their service period was terminated by their death, disability due to service or capture as a prisoner-of-war and their service qualified them for one of the stars. Also if the recipient had received one of the stars for a service period of less than 28 days, they were also awarded the War Medal.

That was quick, just need to identify the other one with Cherbourg on it. Maybe it doesn't have anything to do with the war, but it's attached to the War Medal.

The white lanyard is RA - I was told this by an ex -gunner 94 locating regiment. As far as I am aware RA/RE officers wear a grenade blown on lapels both with "Ubique".

As far as I was aware could be wrong, but the Defence Medal wasn't awarded with recipients details, number rank regiment etc. I think other ranks wear the grenade blown on lapels on 1 and 2 dress in the artillery. RA officers wear the grenade blown ubique on the beret.
