Thanks for that, she has applied for the death certificate so that may or may not give us something usefull ?
It could fit nicely with a Infectious / Tropical disease hospital that you noted, when she recieves the cert I will post the findings here for further comment and advice.

Appears to be very rare condition , can't find much Information re causes of it ? possibly something he was born with ? found a Winwick hospital near Newton but appears to be a mental asylum ?

    Hi,

The death certificate is for Winwick Emergency Hospital. It was common during wartime that the authorities took over existing pre war medical facilities for use as military hospitals so I would hazard a guess that the same happened with a portion (if not the whole) of the Lancashire County Asylum at Winwick (between Warrington and Newton le Willows) to cope with medical admissions - not necessarily mental health cases. Rainhill Mental Hospital was only about 5 miles away from Winwick.

My mother used to tell the tale about how shocked my grandmother was to receive a telegram to inform her that her youngest son - serving with the Royal Navy - had been admitted to Garlands Hospital, Carlisle as she knew it was the Cumberland County Asylum. It was only when my uncle was well enough to write home that she was relieved to hear that he had been admitted for a medical, rather than a mental health, condition.

Thanks Steve, thats helpfull regarding Hospitals, clears up the Asylum Idea,
Have looked at National Archives and Indeed it was taken over in the war and had 800 beds, some records held at Cheshire Archives but cannot see anything that is of use ? an hospital addmission date would have been usefull to find, which might Indicate that he was Indeed in Burma with his unit ,

My friend has made contact with Penistone History Group to try and establish which Newspapers served the area In WW2 In the hope that she might find an obituary /article that may shed more light on hospitalisation date ?
