I wonder if anyone can help with information about the soldier in this picture and also the unit in which he served.

Unfortunately, only a few facts are known. His name was Yana Koudakis Lefketis, known as Yana. He was of Cypriot origin and had lived in London.

He was in the Scottish town of Dalbeattie in March 1943, where he was friendly with a local girl. The picture was taken in that area.

Yana was possibly a member of, or attached to, 92nd (Loyals) Light Anti-Aircraft Regiment RA – which was stationed in Dalbeattie and nearby Castle Douglas at that time.

However, the tartan band around his hat seems to indicate a Scottish regimental connection.

Any information about him would be greatly appreciated.

I think it looks like an Argyll & Sutherland Highlanders cap badge.

Thanks for that, jmcq - the hat does look very much like the Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders

I wonder if anyone knows if any units of the Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders were in the Dalbeattie area in 1943?

    Hi Tmac,
Just saw a post about the 5th A&Sh aka 91st Anti tank regiment and thought of your query about Yana about a year ago.

There is a training range at Dundrennan not far from Dalbeattie which in the War years up to the seventies it was a Tank Firing range. Is it possible that Yana

was training there with the 5th /91st ?

Mabye I'm putting two and two together and getting five!
