Hello, I'd like to find out which of these gentlemen are Arthur John Fletcher CWGC :: Casualty Details CWGC :: Casualty Details Any help appreciated! Soren
No, not really, there was a bloke selling his uncles and gt uncles medals and death penny on cash in the attic, I was just curious, I would never be able to do such a thing
Personally if I bought or came across something like that I would have to trace the family and give back the items. Knowing what I now know about my Great Grandfather and his DCM, I know what these medals mean. The campaign medals to me, even though there were so many issued, have a story attached to each and every one. Each represents a soldier who fought for the rights that we have today. My Great Grandfather must have really struggled with his award as he never won it for saving lives, he recovered the bodies of his men. I'm sure that would have played on his mind. Maybe it is for this reason that I feel the need to find out the story of the Leicesters journey and the men that took part in the march from Ledo Road behind enemy lines in order to build a runway that would allow the rest of the army to fly in and cause so much havoc for the Japanese. My information is building and the number of mens names I have on my list is growing. I feel so honoured to have been able to find out some of the stories I have read and been told. I have had the privilege of talking to several of the men that were actually present and went through the trauma of seeing their 'mates' killed. Some of the stories a very harrowing and have brought tears to my eyes. A couple of the soldiers I have spoken to remember the events and also being with my great grandfather. I have been very lucky in my research. I have had some help one this forum and certainly reading the stories and what other people themselves have found out has only spurred me on to following my path. There is still along way to go but .......I'm certainly not giving up I have a debt to pay those men who fought for what I have today. Their memory will no longer fade with time and be confined to documents in a box. Their lives and their efforts will be brought to the fore from my research. My book will put all my findings and thoughts together to pass onto the families I find and for others to read and maybe begin to understand what terrors, sacrifices and friendship these men went through.
