I've attached the first page of my granddads service record.

Can someone help me in interpreting the line 27/7 - 19.2.42 - ? posted to 90th Bty ? 16.2.42. Date of Casualty is also unlclear. Can someone translate this too?

    First date,s a bit unclear, but it says: 280Bty - Inter-Posted to 90Bty wef 10-2-42 till 16-2-42.
Can't see anything about being a casualty, it's just continuded writing across the casualty column, if thats what you mean?

It appears your grandad was posted to 280th LAA Bty, RA, on 18 September 1941 and then, as Rob states, Inter-posted to 90th LAA Bty, RA, on 10 February 1942.

The words in the left hand column refer to the orders under which the transfer occurred and are usually totally indecipherable, but appear to have been written-up on 19 February 1942.

I can't identify any casualty information...

Both Btys were part of the 49th LAA Regiment, RA, along with the 84th Bty; hence the Inter-posting.

NB. Ron Goldstein of this forum served in 84th Bty!

    Best,

    Steve.

Hi and thanks so far to those who responded. Sorry for the confusion on the casualty part. By this I was referring to the "place" written in the place of casualty coloumn. I know he wasn't a casualty at that point but they usually used that column to mention the place something happened. So he was inter-posted to the 90th from the 280th at an undecipherable place. I also thought arbroath as this was written in the next line but not 100% sure. Others I thought were Westcliff, Nescliff... Any other suggestions?

Btw... what does Inter-posted actually mean? Would he have re-joined the 280th?

David, thanks for the link - great source of info!. Would be great to understand where these TA battalions were stationed at home during 41-42, then i'd gladly go with the Scunthorpe suggestion. Do you know of anywhere we could cross-check this?

Sorry this is where the guys on the forum might help, I only came across this site while researching my Father's history.
If I'm right it will be in the war dairy for the unit for that point in time could have the answer.
    Hope that helps.

Jamie, the applicable Battery or Regiment War Diaries would have that sort of information. They will tell you where the unit was stationed at a particular point in time.

Here is a link to some of the information held in War Diaries for the 49th LAA Regiment: http://ww2talk.com/forums/topic/9474-49th-light-ack-ack-rgt-ra-regimental-diary-extracts/ But for a later timeline!

Some members of the forum do a copying service, for example, Andy (handle 'Drew5233') and Lee (handle 'PsyWar.Org').

There are five place entries on the record: Blackpool, ditto (so, Blackpool again), ????, Arbroath and Reading - the latter where he was released to the Reserve.

    Best,

    Steve.

Steve thanks. Actually i'm already fairly up to speed of what has been posted on here and the 49th LAA in NA and italy. I'm juat trying to piece together his time pre- and post overseas. I only posted the first part of his records. My grandfather was also with 1st Div with 11 LF and R. Sigs in Mandatory Palestine during 45 and 46. Some fantastic reading there!

So I got copies of the 49th LAA regimental diary and I believe the unknown place is "Westerfield", close to Ipswich in Suffolk. It's great how a bit of research can shed some light!

    Hi!

Just spotted this thread and it's mention of the 49th LAA Rgt which was my unit from April '43 to December '44

Don't think I can add anything of use to you but good luck with your research.

Sorry mate......If it had been 84 Bty then we would have had a fighting chance :)

I am reminded of the photo I have of my 2nd unit, A Sqn 4th QOH and the Squadron photo taken at Ferndorf in Austria.

I noted every name , do you not think I was projecting myself into the future ? :)
