Help Needed to Identify this Japanese Helmet

    Hi all.

I've just been given this helmet to inspect and determine if it is an item my local RSL can add to their collection. It has come from an Australian WW2 serviceman's effects, and the note supplied with it states that it is a "captured Japanese helmet from Balikpapan, July 1945".

I'm certainly not up with equipment from the Pacific, so I'm not sure if the claim is correct, or embellished slightly. The Digger definitely served there, however, that's not indicative of the helmet being from the area.

It's grey, and the lining is missing, but it has some straps (broken). The one thing that stands out is the rubber on the inside on the crown, which seems "off". It has no badge, but there is a hole which would probably have been used for it and there is a distinct triangle shape (residue perhaps?) over that area.

I've attached a few shots to illustrate what we've been offered - any help is very much appreciated!

    Thanks!

No idea if you're on there, but if not; d'you mind if I ask Austin Adachi on TwatterX, Reid?
    Show him the pics?

Not sure how he is on materiel, but the sharpest I've seen in the wider field.

I'm not a TwatterX fan I'm afraid, but I'll check his account to see if there's an alternative way to get in touch - thank you very much! :)

    Hi VP,

I sent Austin a message via a form on his research page, and he's been in touch this morning. Thanks for the heads up - hoping he might be able to provide some details.

    Cheers!

EDIT: Austin has come back with some excellent information and leads, to gather some further information via research on my part.

In a nutshell: probably a navy helmet and the donor details do match with the object, so all up a darn good result indeed!! :D
