I am trying to find a place on the Maginot Line called "Stolbusch wood". This is where 1st Gordons of the 51st Highland Division initially withdrew to from the area of Ste Marguerite - St Francois Le Croix on the 21st-22nd of May 1940. I have scoured 125000 maps of the area and cant find it?? Has it been cut down or renamed perhaps? It cant be that far as they moved there on foot. Baffled? Any ideas chaps?
Does this help? US combat report from 1944: http://www.robertfburns.com/90thNovemberOperationsReport.pdf See page 28 - it appears to be close to Metzervisse.
Rich, You are a star! This fits perfectly with the withdrawal route as well. Would you beleive it, its the one 125000 map that I dont have and its not named on the 150000 map! Beleive it or not this has been bugging me for a number of years!! Brilliant! Chuffed to bits! Thanks again Rich, Chester
Vitesse, yes bang on! Its amazing to think that it was fought in 4 years later by US troops. Many thanks for that very interesting info
I got lucky to be honest, having followed the same Google trail as Vitesse after first trying 'Bois de...' with no luck. ...ain't the internet wonderful ?
