Hi I'm new to the forum. I have just received my father's service records but don't really understand them so I'm hoping someone can help. He enlisted on 11/6/1942 and was posted as a gunner to 51st Anti-Tank Training Regiment, R.A. at Catterick. The form says Territorial Army. Reading other posts it sounds as if everyone was enlisted as TA, is that correct? A month later he is moved to 56 Med-R. I'm assuming this is a Medium Regiment, but can't find out anything about it. I know he didn't serve overseas but would love to find out more about what he was involved in. The record also says in 1943 under postings what looks like To P Cadie or P Cadle or P Cadre. The same thing appears in 1945. Can anyone shed any light on this? Thanks in anticipation
Hi geordielass + welcome 56th (Highland) Medium Regt RA, 147, 221 Btys. were formed at Aberdeen in 1938, most war formed arty regts were TA. They went to France with 3 Corps in 1940, but spent the rest of the war till 1945 as a Home Forces Regt in GB under Eastern Command. As Drew says there are war-diaries that will tell you what they were doing when your father was with them. Best Rob
Hi and welcome Here is a bit on Terrritorial Army - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Territorial_Army_(United_Kingdom) So those who were not in the regular army were joining up to be in the Territorials as was my Father. Here is a bit on the regiment- RA 1939-45 56 Med Rgt The P Cadre may mean he was posted to an area awaiting assignment?? You can see from this page, not all regiments were Territorial - RA 1939-45 Medium Regts Index (RA = Royal Artillery) If it is some help have a look through my page on my Father, some of the abbreviations etc have been worked out, so they may help you- http://www.ww2talk.com/forum/searching-someone-military-genealogy/21898-war-records-help-abbreviations-interpretation-service-records.html Some I am still searching!! regards Robert
