Attached is a photo of Alex Cochrane in uniform. He was born in 1904 so I suspect that this is from the inter-war years. The photo was taken in the Tolcross area of Edinburgh. Any help identifying the uniform would be apprecaited. This is the highest resolution that I can get it! http://www.ww2talk.com/forum/album.php?albumid=928&pictureid=5486 Roxy
Sporran badge looks like Cameron Highlanders, few here to see what you think. https://www.google.co.uk/search?um=1&hl=en&client=firefox-a&rls=org.mozilla:en-GBfficial&channel=np&q=cameron+highlanders+sporran+badge&bav=on.2,or.r_gc.r_pw.r_qf.&biw=1024&bih=675&ie=UTF-8&tbm=isch&source=og&sa=N&tab=wi&ei=9pQZULXFJoOi0QWqk4HwBQ bonnet badge & collar dogs here. Medals of the Queen's Own Cameron Highlanders
The sporran certainly looks to be Cameron, and tho not too clear, the badge looks to be Cameron. The Argyll sporran has a set of six tassels.
51HD, Thanks. I'll have to check with my Mum - she who is always right! - to work out if he served in the War. Unless anyone here can add that information! Roxy
Alexander Cochrane - no middle name - was born in Edinburgh on 19 Aug 1904. I have no idea of rank achieved. You've seen the only picture of him in uniform that I've seen. Roxy
Just to add to the confusion, I have found a family photo - the back says 'To May from Alex' - of a man, that looks very similar to the first. Only this time he's on a horse! http://www.ww2talk.com/forum/album.php?albumid=928&pictureid=5504 A close up - which makes me think that they are the same man! http://www.ww2talk.com/forum/album.php?albumid=928&pictureid=5505 Any clues? Roxy
Mother didn't even know that her uncle was in the army! However, Alex's sister. May - to whom the photo on the horse is addressed to - died in 1930. Consequently, that photo must have been taken between 1920 and 1930. Also, the photo in the kilt - because of where it was taken - must have been taken post 1932. Roxy
Roxy The chap on the horse is definitely in Royal Artillery uniform. See the cap badge in the close up of his face. But the uniform looks WW1 to my uneducated eye. Are you sure it's the same man? Cheers
Chick, Thanks. I'm fairly sure - but not absolutely certain - that they are the same man. The RA one from Alex to his sister May and the other is him with another sister Jean. I wouldn't be surprised if if was WW1 (notwithstanding his birth in 1904!) as the family had a habit of joining up. His elder brother was wounded in Gallipoli at 17! Roxy
