When I was in Normandy I visited Sword Beach and La Grand Bunker (which I thought was amazing). I was just looking through the photos and found a manikin with an insignia I have not seen. Can someone identify it for me. It seems like a naval unit because of the anchor. But I could be wrong. It clearly of the Royal Engineers. Thanks Ben
I've copied their diaries in the past, it's either 89 or 90 Field Company RE or 8 GHQ if memory serves me well.
Believe it may be 91 Field Company as discussed here, Ben http://ww2talk.com/forums/topic/29179-how-the-royal-engineers-captured-the-grand-bunker-at-ouistreham/?hl=%2Bgrand+%2Bbunker
Both the anchor and the white band on the helmet identify units of a Beach Group. This consisted of an infantry battalion, engineers, provosts, pioneers, medical units and RASC. They were responsible for the operation of the beach after the assault units had passed through and before a more permanent and specialised organisation took over. Mike
