Inside two days of your first posting - you have learned a great deal of information in that he served in one of three DLI battalions in France - possibly ended up in the 9th Battalion - and you continue to swan around looking for shadows - main thing is at this time is to learn a little bit of patience and all will be revealed as the main answers are to be found in his service records - which will take time to fall into your hands...so ease up and be patient...

as I can guarantee that when the records finally arrive you won't make head nor tail of them and you will be back with a dozen questions - so we have the patience to deal with them - you must also have the same patience - OK ?
    Cheers

Yes i understand completely. I'm just enjoying looking into my grandfathers past i never really knew much about him as i rarely saw him, its all just been quite exciting you know.

Hopefully i should have his battalion number by today or tomorrow which will keep me busy for a while. I apologize for my over eagerness and guess work, I just love my history and having a family member a part of it is very exciting for me.

While we can completely understand the excitement of finding out the nooks and crannies of History we also recall some bitter disappointments in finding out way too much for our own good - and we older forum members have been down many alternate paths to come up with the right ones - so as I say - stay cool- there is still a long way to go.... !
    Cheers

It seems my uncle doesn't know what battalion he was in either. Guess the wait for the service record is on.

Just found out today also that my granddad's dad served in the RAF in WW1. That gives me something to do while i wait for the records to come through! Anyone know a decent site for tracing RAF ww1 files?

I'd start with RFC first ;)

Ah an elementary mistake on my behalf, Royal Flying Corps, right?

    Aye...The RAF wasn't formed until 1918.

start a thread in the prewar section if you like.
RAF formed 1st April 1918 so it was entirely possible he could have served in the RAF in WW1 & not in the RFC at all .
    ;)

Sound advice on being prepared to wait, I sent off for my Grandad's service record in February and am still waiting. The suspense is killing me!
