I have two photos of my grandad in army uniform however I cannot find his service record on the usual online forums. Born in 1918 I believe he enlisted either just before or at the outbreak of WW2. He was discharged on medical grounds early on, he had polio as a child so maybe wasn’t in the best of health. There’s also a family story that he took part in the testing of gas masks and some of the men died as a result, he also wore a silver badge to show he’d been discharged. I’ve found records of other family members but not for Frank Wyldbore, I heard on the radio that just one day in uniform meant you have a service record. Can anybody please suggest why I cannot find his?
    Thank you.

Only the MoD will have his service records.
    They are not online.

    Sound advice from Owen.

You may find the odd snippet about a soldier online but the only place to get full chapter and verse is from the service records and none of them are in the public domain (unlike surviving WW1 era records) so you always need to apply to U.K. MOD via this link -

Get a copy of military service records

I don’t know his service number so that’s going to be a problem. Thanks anyway.

You don’t need a service number.

MOD will search on DOB and full name only.

Thank you, I’ll get dad to apply as he’s next of kin.
