Hello My name is Paula, researching my family history had brought me to your forum, but mostly trying to find out further information about my beloved maternal grandfather. Gunner James Simmons 983860 Royal Artillery 30/5/40 enlisted My mum has sent off to the MOD for his service records. She has his soldier record book with his medical, inoculation dates etc. We don’t know anything else as regards to regiment etc. He did say he spent a lot of time in Netherlands during his service in WW2 I am hoping that we will be able to find out more about his time in the RA. Many Thanks Paula
Welcome Paula, There are lots of knowledgeable RA chaps and lasses on here ,unfortunately I`m not one of them but I can get the ball rolling RA Enlistment Welcome again Kyle
Thank You!! He was a Limber Gunner (hope I’ve spelt it right) From the information posted above by Mr Jinks aka Kyle I think he was in the 76th Medium Reg (Shropshire Yeomanry) which would fit as he was from Shifnal in Shropshire.
I agree that it looks like he was in the 76h Medium Regiment, RA. However, they did not serve in the Netherlands during WWII, rather: Home, Egypt, Paiforce, Egypt, Italy, Austria. Probably need to wait for his service records to confirm! Best, Steve.
Thanks Steve, that’s exactly where the mystery begins....his close friend, Les Cherrington, all be him younger than my grandfather was in 76th Med and served in North African campaign. We have asked him but he couldn’t remember what regiment my grandfather was in. He did have France & Germany Star medal among others?
