Hello, I'm new to the forum.
I'm currently researching my Grandfathers WW2 service and am hoping there are a number of experts here who will help fill in knowledge gaps (There are a lot) regarding some specifics.

My avatar is my Grandfather. He served with the 1st Battalion the Buffs in the Middle East, North Africa and in Italy. On the reverse of the photo is written "Rome June '44" which fits in with what I've read about the battalion.
This forum is where I discovered how much the Battalion moved commands, between brigades and divisions.

I have a full copy of the war diary if any members would like anything date specific, so please let me know.
I will say there are circa 1500 jpeg images so I'll do my best!

Looking forward to getting some answers and learning so much more
    Many thanks
    Andy

Hello & welcome. I am sure that you will receive much help from members here. My own research does not cover your interests, Middle east etc. However, wishing you many happy hours here on the forum.

Welcome, as you probably know, there are few WW2 records in the public domain, but there are some, could be worth giving his name and number - you never know.

Sorry that your previous post drew a blank - here is the link for the benefit of others:
1st Bn Royal East Kent Regiment - Vehicles used?

    Hi Tony,
Yes, if only they were available on line. I like visiting Kew but it's a heck of a journey.
No worries about the vehicles post, should've introduced myself first maybe.
    Thanks for highlighting it

    Just to add my Grandfather's details;

6290278 Sgt Albert Edward White, 1st Bn the Buffs, "C" Coy North Africa then "S" Coy Italy.
Wounded 9th May at 19:50 by enemy shelling at P.3676

Looks like you have some pretty specific information there. You have followed the correct route, got his service records (sort of) and then the relevant war diaries, so you are in a position to draw up a timeline of his service.

My only comment is that the casualty list gives his rank as Corporal, alongside him are listed:
    6296180 CHAPPLE Pte R
    6296002 STEINBERG Pte M
All are listed with a casualty date of 9/10.5.43 - may or may not be the same incident.

Yes, easy to pinpoint the date and time as he was listed in FWR and Coy was listed.
Once back with the Bn (September I think) he appears to have been promoted to Sgt.
The family always assumed the vehicle was a tank but I think maybe a truck or jeep?
His burns sustained attempting to remove someone from the vehicle.
I recall 5 casualties, 3 from the vehicle and 2 from shellshock

Any idea what CC he would've been evacuated to? 133 General Hospital is the only one I could find in the area

    Andy.

Was your grandfather with 1 BUFFS for the Final Offensive in Apr 45?

    Regards

    Hello Frank,
Operation Grapeshot? Yes, I'm pretty sure this was listed on his service records.
I've not got to that yet, still in Africa.
He was in "S" Company in Italy, Carrier driver I think
