i know i will be visiting this site frequently as i am hooked on history and no one else in my house is interested so i can,t discuss my findings with anyone!!!

    Hi janine,

    Welcome to the forum.

Do you have more info relating to your grandad? The Squadron he was with when he was shot down and the date would help pinpoint the incident.

    Regards
    Peter.

Allo and welcome to the forum. Was your Grandad a member of the "guinea pig" club by any chance?

What a lot of holiday grumps we have here, I'm loving every minute of it, endless meandering around pointing at things, playing games, looking at pretty girls, etc with the Boy Slug. It'll be a shame when it has to end.

Don't get me wrong, Phil. I love the summer hols, but they can be long... although not as long as when we lived in France. It 9+ weeks in those days!!

    hi
not sure if this will end up where its supposed to as this is my first post,i am just replying to your question
    my grandad was kenneth pursehouse
    lancaster bomber/rear gunner
raf no;159575 aircrew based at lincoln[ not sure where at the moment as my nan can't remember and my aunt is on holiday]
he was at bridlington college where he did his training, and he started off on the wellington and then went on the lancaster. he did most of his missions over germany and he had his accident around 1944.
according to my nan the plane went down tail first not nose so when it crashed my grandad was the first one they got out and took him to hospital, in lincoln he had a few injuries and a fractured skull.
i hope you can help me from this info if not i will try to find out more in the next few days
    many thanks janine

    Hi Janine

Firstly welcome aboard and good luck with your research.

My eder brother was also a rear gunner in Lancasters, he was sadly to be killed almost at the end of WW2 but I didn't start my research into his death until 1995.

After an emotive visit to the RAF Museum in Hendon the sight of their huge Lancaster aroused in me a desire to find out as much as I could and they were able to put me on to his old unit (166 Squadron Association ) and this started a research that was to last for almost two years.

I would suggest that his old unit's Association, once you have found it, is the place to start.

Be prepared for a long haul but, believe me, you will find it well worthwhile.

    Best wishes

    Ron
